So if I wanted a Sailor and never had one and am looking for a jumping off point to potentially buy further up the chain, would a ProFit 21 with MF nib a good choice? I’d like to take advantage of the yen/$ issue, but have no idea what is what. Sailor has just so many different models/variations and time appears of the essence (otherwise I would have spend the time and done a deep dive; so my apologies being seemingly lazy).

Thanks

A Sailor MF would be close to a western F. How much feedback do you want? All Sailors have feedback but the finer the nib, the more feedback you’ll experience.

I think a Profit/1911 with a 21K nib would be an outstanding way to get into Sailor.

I just checked the price on Amazon   $142.60  Link

I have accumulated 4 of them from this Vendor, at varying prices.  All Medium.

I found the 1911 Large 'M' line width to be roughly comparable to the Pilot 743 SFM.  (Depending on the pen you get) YMMV <---

None of them have much feedback.

These pens do not come in FM.  Your choice is F or M.  If you are in the United States, the best price option is to purchase from the seller Amazon Japan on amazon.com.  Below are some options.  In some cases Amazon Japan (which is the lowest price) won't appear first, you need to look for it under Other Sellers of the product:

14K:

Fine: https://www.amazon.com/Sailor-fountain-professional-silver-11-1222-220/dp/B001TI9LMU

Medium: https://www.amazon.com/Sailor-fountain-professional-silver-11-1222-220/dp/B001TIBILM?th=1

https://www.amazon.com/Sailor-11-1227-301-Fountain-Fairytanashi-Ryumiagi/dp/B0861KQ7QG  [This is a very attractive finish on this pen]

So is feedback equivalent to scratching across paper? I’ve been writing exclusively using medium nibs and all those pens are just floating across paper. The exceptions are my Pilot CM stubs I got, although I don’t mind how that feels, in fact I like it bc it keeps me connected to the paper and my writing. When I ordered the Sailor it was advertised as a medium nib but after I partially learned the Sailor coding realized that it was a MF nib. Might be a blessing in disguise though. In case I get bitten by the bug, what would be the next logical model choice?

So I placed an order for the 11-2024-320. The 3 in the -320 does not indicate MF? I got that of a coding scheme posted on this site and according to it a 2 is Fine and a 4 would be Medium? So I got this wrong? I would not mind bc wanted a medium anyway. But I’d need to figure out the coding scheme more validly then, unless I messed up somewhere.

I misspoke.  Sailor tells me the availability is:

11-2024-120(EF)
11-2024-220 (F)
11-2024-320 (MF)
11-2024-420 (M)
11-2024-620 (B)
11-2024-720 (Z)
11-2024-920 (MS)

But I own the 11-2024-320 purchased from Amazon Japan, the seller, and it is a medium.

Feedback is not scratchiness, it’s being able to feel the job as it moves across the paper. Some nibs are extremely smooth and feel like you’re barely writing on anything, others feel more like writing with a pencil. Sailor is the latter.

Being a novice, I don’t appreciate the difference. But I know now what you’re talking about. My Pilot subs have the pencil feel while my other ones just literally glide over the paper. Now I am getting excited about the Sailor. I wonder if I really get a MF as advertised or the M nib.

Scratchiness would feel like the pen is digging into, pulling on, or cutting through the fibers in the paper. Feedback just relays some physical cues as to how the pen is writing on the paper.
