Review_JunL 629/ Wing Sung 629 Piston Steel Nib

Hello Comrade,

I find the steel nibs from JunL is of better value than its gold nibs, which I do not recommend if your residential address is out of China.

As a tradition, avoid JunL on its new launch.

Correct me if anything wrong of the timeline, same as human parentes, JunL herself got no clue of its babys' birthdays. I did it for her here:

  • 629 with various fancy gold was launched in Nov, 2021.
  • 629 Steel + Piston was launched in Apr, 2022.
  • 629 Steel + Piston + Aluminum Piston Thread was launched in Dec, 2023 (only in lake blue, torpedo & flat, slot & full window)
  • 629 Steel is also available in vacumatic (the mechanism used in 601A 2018)
  • Other than stated, 629 is available in black/ coke red/ pepsi blue, in both torpedo and flat top (circa mid 2022) , with translucent amber ink window Slot and Full.
  • As of the time of writing, all above are current in production.

I believe here is a better product description than any existing 629 online sales pages out there, before online sellers start brutally straight copying from here. I have gone through all the sales pages, I am stunned to see such quality of description in 2024. I wouldn't take leave to doubt my dog could do a better writing and be a more responsible seller. Money is too easy for those middle-men.

Pro

  • nib OK, piston OK, overall finishing in 2024, OK+.
  • for alum piston thread, I find it very slight change to the balance of the pen towards the end  the of pen. I have no plastic version. I am using my imagination here. The Poor Man 629 is with plastic piston thread.
  • ink capacity of 1.6ml + 0.2ml, same as other pistons from JunL (maybe I will do another article to explain why all JunL pistons share the same capacity, from the baby 629 to giant 630/6XX Ebonite: as only one type of piston head from JunL.)

Con

  • price is in the high end of spectrum of a china steel nib + piston.
  • factory piston assembly not perfect, rework needed for an ink capacity extension of 0.2ml. Refer to my JunL 632 Blogger page.
  • only EF/F nib width selection for the steel. I want a bloody M.

To summary, honestly, why not consider a Majohn T5? For half the price. You get 99% the same, only the piston thread would be in plastic, which I see no issue at all. And, you will be able to have your factory nib in M, which writes perfectly!

Do you have a photo of the ‘fancy gold’ 629 from Nov 2021?

One version of the 629 you did not mention is the sterling silver LE.

Yes, Jun Lai uses it, including on their nibs.

I have a sky blue steel nib 629 originally with the F nib. I hated that nib so I replaced it with a Majohn 1.1 mm nib. It is one of my favourite pens now. 😘

The build quality seems slightly inferior to Majohn P136 and the WingSung 630 (I like this steel nib version a lot.) I actually do not feel my 629 is backweighted - not sure what type of piston filler I got since I have not opened it. The Asvine V200 IME feels backweighted as far as comparison goes.

Thanks Shanghai Dude for providing us information otherwise will be difficult for us to know. Keep it up mate.

Various fancy Gold nib? Just currently running #6 14k gold: straight, jf, jf heartbeat, heartbeat.

I ignore the silver 926 on purpose, as it is not a regular production model and currently out of production.

If your 926 is a piston type, uncrew the end cap as you would do to refill the ink, then the piston thread is exposed. Check my 2nd picture in this post.

Most likely a sky blue 926 piston would be plastic thread.

Junl, junlai, wing sung 6xx, ws, all indicate to one pen maker, as of now.

I know it is a mess. This mess is very likely to be carried out till 31st December, 2027.

But one thing for sure, JunL will be in use after that. That's why I pick using JunL from now.

Why that?

Thanks by the way for the clarification.

I am doing the article. Wing Sung 6xx is just ”licensing". JunL has always been the actual maker since 2015. Another example is the "Zeiss" label on Sony A camras, it's utterly nothing do with Zeiss back in Germany. Sony paid Zeiss 30 euro per piece used. And all Sony Zeiss label lens bypass the acient Zeiss Consumer Optics product system.

But no worries. Business will be as usual.

I see thanks.

-off-topic-

I have seen such type of pen licensing too.

Hero 3035 is probably licensed from Baoer. Nearly identical pens - just different colors compared to the Baoer 3035.

The 3035 itself is of course a hommage to Montblancs Greta Garbo pen.
