De Atramentis Document Orange

I reviewed it’s sibling ink a few weeks ago, this is a paler version, watery and lacks lubrication.

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/375068-de-atramentis-artist-orange/

When I first tested this ink few years ago, it didn’t leave a good impression. It still has not changed. If you're addicted to fountainpens and looking for a cure, this ink it is. My hand refuses to reach for the pen, I'm cured :lticaptd:

On the plus says it’s good on copy paper, and for those who love shading it does, but the legibility becomes compromised.

If you absolutely need a waterproof orange, I will go for the Artist version (it’s cheaper and more lubricated) or try one of the numerous Octopus Write and Draw oranges. I would say this ink is only useful for art, ink washes and mixing.

Note the images are harsh so you might need sunglasses 😎

Writing Samples:

It's impossible to scan and difficult to photograph. I added full page comparison with De Atramentis Artist Orange, so you can make up your mind:

I didn't use a flex pen, I dipped a Brause rose dip pen nib.

It didn't bleed through copy paper

This was done 3 years, on HP 32  paper with my impressions:

And finally a humorous art work, entitled Fred & Ginger ;)

Inks used: Platinum Carbon Black and an unidentified Greenish ink (probably Diamine Dark Forest)

 fred_and_ginger_by_yazeh1_dheico1-414w-2

·      Pens used: Pilot Kakuno Ef, Lamy (EF/F/M/B, 1.1), Brause dip pen nib.

·      What I liked: Writing on copy paper, but most of all emptying my pen.

·      What I did not like: Almost everything.

·       What some might not like: It’s a pigment ink, it's pale.

·      Shading: Yes

·      Ghosting: No.

·      Bleed through: No.

·      Flow Rate: Watery

·      Lubrication: Dry

·      Nib Dry-out: Did not notice.

·      Start-up:  Ok

·      Saturation:  Pastel

·      Shading Potential: Surprisingly yes.

·      Sheen: No.

·      Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Did not notice.

·      Nib Creep / “Crud”: Did not notice.

·      Staining (pen):  It stained the feed with orange after soaking all night in cleaning solution.

·      Clogging: Did not notice.

·      Cleaning: Like all pigment inks the more it stays in the pain the more difficult the cleaning.

·      Water resistance: Excellent.

·      Availability: 45 ml bottles.

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier  :)

Pale?  Weak?  Watery?  Lacks lubrication?

Sign me up!  😹

But I do love the sketches!  And the fact that the chroma looks like a candle flame.  And your descriptions!

So keep it up, @yazeh!  Can't wait to see the next; I always like it when it's an ink I've actually used.  Thanks!  👍🏻

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:yikes: Do I dare continue into this ink review after that intro?  Duh! Of course I do.  Somewhere below is fun artwork! :D

Thank you!  (Now, where are my sunglasses....? :PAh, another candle-flame chroma.  Nice.

Artist Orange puts Document Orange to shame, though the Artist version appears to spread as well (unless different pens were used).

(That Caran d'Ache Electric Orange, man, still killing me.  They could use that swatch to power laser beams! :D )

Holds up well to water.  Can't blame the kitty for staying far away from that one - citrus oils are toxic for kitties, after all. ;)

Fred & Ginger: :lticaptd:

Thank you for another fun review!

Amazing (well, maybe) that this and its twin (or brother or sister) -- i.e. De A's Artist -- look so similar but write so differently. I guess it's the surfactant etc. as usual.,

Nope. Same brands were used, but for the flex. I used a dip pen for Document 😉

If memory serves me right the Artist has lesser Document properties. Hence the difference 🙏

@yazeh -- Not a color for me at all.  But thanks as usual for the comprehensive review and the usual fun artwork.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Thank you! In my imagination, from now on, I will fill all the pens I adore and when my mouse pointer is already over the "add to shopping basket" button with this ink! Thak you for showing us this opt-out! I will report back how it worked out!  :) :)

Very similar to the Artist version: the ink may have some niche use in ink-and-wash applications - you provided already one! ... aehm, who is Fred?

I would also not sign any serious document with this ink.

The only difference is that Artist is much more pleasant to write, and is more orange  :)

It would be confusing if a ginger cat, will be called Fred, wouldn't it? Then again, we can argue the opposite.  In the end what's in a name? 😎

  • 2 weeks later...

It looks an awful lot like Stipula Saffron.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

From the swatches it seems to be. Funny thing when washing the pen it did remind me of the colour of saffron. Though if you let the saffron steep in water for ten minutes then it would take a reddish tinge :)
