Sailor Tamenuri KoP

Has anybody the old Tamenuri pen and the new Tamenuri Murasaki pen?

My questions: it seems the barrel of the new one is 2 mm slimmer. How about the cap and grip section diameter?

Sailor's product page says 'Φ17.8×154mm': https://en.sailor.co.jp/product/11-2090/

This is almost certainly a typo. I think these Tamenuri pens are all made from clipless King Profit ebonite bodies. A diameter of 17.8 mm would make it narrower than the Profit Large model (18 mm).

Actually, it looks slimmer. Look at the cap of both pens. The old one is slowly getting larger from top to bottom. The new one is quickly stopping this increase - around 1/3.

I take back my comment about the typo: I got the two pens in the wrong order! It's actually the old Tamenuri dimensions that are wrong. The diameter of the King Profit cap is 17 mm without a clip, 20 mm with a clip. Since Sailor Tamenuri models are all clipless, a 17 mm diameter makes sense, and doesn't indicate a narrower pen.

As for the picture and how the shape of the caps don't match, it's likely because of poor photo editing on Sailor's part.

Yoseka Stationery has publised their own photographs, and they look different from the official ones: https://yosekastationery.com/collections/sailor-bespoke-nibs/products/sailor-tamenuri-murasaki-fountain-pen-limited-edition

The section actually has a trim ring, and the cap tapering is more pronounced.

That pen is beautiful. I wonder the price in Europe.

Goulet seems to remeasure by themselves but they only have the new Tamenuri on their website: https://www.gouletpens.com/products/sailor-bespoke-fountain-pen-tamenuri-murasaki

I sent them a message asking if they also measured the first Tamenuri.

Unfortunately, they never had the first Sailor Tamenuri so they don't know.

I really respect the culture that they have built at Goulet. Little things like doing your own measurements and being able to say “I don’t know” are, unfortunately, becoming rare.

My guess is that Yoseka posted the wrong pictures... In this tamenuri series, the aodame, midoridame, shirodame, and tamenuri all had the old nib and the section ring. The new murasaki, obviously with the new nib, does not have the section ring. On the official sailor promo fotos, that is. And those currently posted do not contain the LE number yet. So it is a bit confusing.

Anyway, the text on sailor.co.jp ("Tamenuri ‘Murasaki’ will gradually change its surface color to a purplish hue over time.") did win me over...I have reserved one.

Really? 'Yoseka posted the wrong pictures'? I hope this video will prove once and for all that it is Sailor who provided the wrong pictures, and that their pen in reality does not appear like it does in their own promotional pictures: https://youtu.be/QA3cG0u31Dk?t=1618

If photo and video and evidence are not enough, well, I hope you will at least believe your own eyes when you take delivery of it...

Thanks for posting the link to the Goulet unboxing video.  The price was already enough to put me off, but now it just p****s me off.  Perhaps that urushi-coated box is beautiful, but it has to have had a significant impact on the product price.  Boxes should be something that you throw into the recycle bin once you receive it.

Hold your horses - I just guessed. Out of a naive belief that Sailor would be careful with their promotion of an expensive item.

Glad to see I am not the only one who is naive.

  • 3 weeks later...

I am impatient...EU is a month behind US with respect to delivery of the murasaki. Last sunday we had the Dutch Pen Show and Catherine of Sakura FP Gallery informed that the week prior French dealers received their allotted pen(s) and that Belgium should follow next week. This week that is. And it is Thursday. Pausing anxiously hitting refresh on my email inbox for news, I took some screenshots from the Goulet youtube presentation...sigh...

White smoke out of Sailor’s chimney! The pen left the EU warehouse today, so with a stopover at the dealer’s I will hopefully receive it mid/late next week.

Nice pen - if only the signature were on the backside.

Well, that might depend how you screw the barrel to the section, meaning where the thread "catches", as this screenshot shows after the pen was disassembled and assembled again:
