Flex nib on Jinhao?

This is one of my first threads so I hope I put this in the right place.

I just got another five Jinhaos, and I've been wondering whether it's possible to get a flex nib to put on one of them. I got a 992, X159 I think and a few others.

So I've looked at FPR nibs, and Noodler's, but shipping is prohibitive because of where I am. It's like $45 for a $1 nib or something. I have a few cheap low quality copperplate nibs, but they're scratchy and not too durable. I'd like something smooth, and very fine. I don't need much flex. As long as some variation is visible, I'm happy. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. 🙏

Hi,

since you're on a tight budget, I'd say, just get some spare Jinhao nibs and chop away! :)

There are some factory "soft" nibs, like the Jowo Flex and Omniflex, that you may be able to purchase locally also... but don't expect much flex or softness.

That's why I thing you might be happier just by cutting some inexpensive Jinhao nibs yourself 🤘

Good luck!

You can put a comic-G on a x159 or 750 but you'll need to widen/deepen the ink channel on the feed to accommodate the nib's demand for ink. Easy enough to do with an x-acto. Work slowly and keep your fingers out of the way!

Also the cap may not fit correctly without knocking the tip of the nib, so be aware of that.

Thanks for the suggestions! I ended up using a file to file the nib down, and I got it significantly thinner. Doesn't work too well though. I might try cutting next.

Well, keep at it and eventually you'll get there ;)

I have thought about it, but wasn't confident enough to file it thinner, because it's easy to overdo it and then the structure of the nib is compromised...

But, if you're going to succeed, I may also give it a shot :) combine both methods: cut a little to make the shoulders narrower and file it down a little, to lower the resistance even more.

Good luck!
