Another Safari for 2024

Today I walked into my favorite pen store to buy some new ink-colour bottles. There were no bottles yet only cartridges. The saleswoman told me that there will be another Safari coming out in a few weeks and that it will be dark green, Has anyone heard the same news?

Very interesting.
But it’s not like Lamy hasn’t done “green” to death.  If it’s a dark green, I wonder how much different it would be from Savannah.

I remember that they released that quick succession of LE Safaris in various shades of bright-and-shiny green back in the 2010s.
Colours that ranged from ‘In-your-face green’, through ‘luminous green’, to ‘Visible-from-Space green’.
And there’s the ‘standard’ range Safari in a bright shiny green.

And they have also, as you say, recently offered us the ‘toothpastey’ pastel green, and the reissue of the far more muted ‘Savannah’ green.

But I think that I could be tempted by a Safari in a colour more reminiscent of one of the mittel-Europäischer dunkel Wälder…
You know, a dark and murky sort of green; one that calls to mind our ancestral memories of the ancient Mirkwoods, in the legends of which our ancestors communed with their Kobolde, and whose benighted winding byways witches and werewolves were once wont to wander.

A dark green of a similar sort of colour to the one that Lamy used on the Aion of that name - or a colour somewhere on a spectrum between those of the ‘Savannah’ and ‘Petrol’ Safaris - might be ‘right up my street’.
Although I cannot decide whether I would prefer its plastic to be smooth and ‘glossy’, or textured and ‘matte’.
And then there’s the question of nib colour and trim colour - shiny metal? Black? Or the same colour as the plastic?

🤔

Wait -- WHAT?  They're doing a *THIRD* Safari SE color this year?  And what, roughly a month after the Blackberry and Cliffs SEs were released, at that?  Did those two other SE colors sell that badly?   (I'll admit that when I saw them in person at at a table at B/W a few weeks ago, I was underwhelmed at best, although I did end up ordering a bottle of the Pink Cliffs ink, and actually kinda like it....)

I was really hoping that they'd release this year's al-Star SE pens soon, to see if any of them took my fancy.

This green with the gold clip one I'd have to see -- but betting, given their other green SE pens over the years -- that this one won't interest me any more than the others did.... :(

Perhaps the new Blackberry and Cliffs SEs did so well that Lamy saw an opportunity for another 2924 SE.  BTW, Lamy has released three SE colors before, so a third SE this year is not unusual or unexpected.

True, but in the past all three SE pens were released at the same time (I remember the year when one of the 3 colors was Violet, and got one of those -- didn't like the other two SE colors at all).

Last year, Lamy released five non-standard Safari pens; Three pastel colours, a blue edition with a red clip, and a white pen with a black clip. The blue one was the standard blue with only a different colour clip, the white with the black clip was a reissue of a special for a store in Japan pen if I'm not wrong.

Are you sure that they were all from last year?  Because the "blue with the red clip" one sounds like the "reboot" French Blue one, and I passed on it when I saw it in the Lamy Soho store in NYC.  And didn't go to New York over the holidays in 2023 (my in-laws were sick and -- understandably -- didn't want to deal with company).

The blue Lamy with the red clip of last year is different from the French Blue in the tone of the colour, it was the same as the regular edition. The French blue is lighter. I don't know if it was a special edition for an Asian country and resale in other countries.

Oh, I'm quite aware of the color difference between the original French Blue (which IIRC was from about 2015) and the "reboot" -- I got lucky on an original one on eBay a few years ago.  Which is why when that "reboot" pen came out and I saw it in person I passed on it.  Unfortunately the cap on my French Blue got lost, and it was cheaper for me to order a pink cap from an eBay seller in the UK than to get an actual French Blue cap from a seller in IIRC Germany -- the shipping ALONE was going to cost more than I paid for the pen (used -- with only a few bite marks on the end of the barrel ) to begin with....  Basically the pen cost me about as much as a new al-Star would have been, and it turned out that there was already a converter installed ).  But add about another twenty bucks for the replacement cap plus shipping.... :(

Green and gold, Japan only. Saw it on Insta, but can’t find it anymore

Well, I see that the 2024 al-Star SE pens have been announced (and a couple of places already have them in stock.

Tempted by the "Aquatic" one, but would have to probably see it in person to decide whether I like the transparent blue section or not.  The "Fiery" al-Star, OTOH?  Ehhhh.  I already have one in Vibrant Pink and one in Lilac.

In case anyone wants to know what they look like. (This refers to the above post regarding the new Al-Stars, not the supposedly more-coming-in-2024 SE Safaris.)

I'm still trying to make my mind up about whether I like the colored sections or not.  The section on the "Fiery" is somehow more jarring looking (at least in the promo photos) -- even though though it's a way closer color to the barrel and cap it's just enough different that it looks weird to me.  And I already have both the Vibrant Pink and the Lilac al-Stars.  The section on the "Aquatic"?  Lamy didn't even pretend to try and match the barrel and cap color -- but overall I like the color of the pen better.  But still kinda waiting till I can maybe see one in person.

  • 2 weeks later...

I’d like to order the Safari Field Green, which is a Japan-only release. Does anybody know how to go about doing that?
