Please help me identify these Parker pens/pencils

Hi, I inherited some things from my family, including some very nice Parker fountain pens and 2 mechanical pencils.  The pen/pencil set is made of 2-tones of 14K gold and brown plastic in an art-deco motif.  There is also one that looks like it's made of rings of tiger-eye, with 14k (all marked) accents.  It, however, is missing a small piece from the top of the cap.  Finally there is a sterling silver mechanical pencil with a nice grid design.  I'm going to clean them up, but in the mean time I was hoping someone could tell me something about them, if anyone knows.IMG_4398.thumb.JPG.ce7241c126c546b14cc762aa5f2ebe41.JPG

#3 is a 51 Pencil, sterling silver 1st year design cap.  You'll need to check the date code to find out when it was made.

#2 is an earlier Vacumatic because if the 14K, I guessing that the clip is 14K as well.  There are plenty of end jewels out there so it will be easy to replace and getting a new sac should be around $50

You might as well throw both of them in the trash.

#1 is a 51 set, Buckskin Beige w/ two tone 14K Empire caps.  Pretty much the Grail for most 51 collectors!!!  Have them cleaned, use them, and be the envy of pen collectors everywhere 🙂

p.s. OK, you can keep #2 & #3 if you like.

Thank you, FlighterGuy, that's very useful information!  I know the one with the missing piece (#2) was my dad's and my grandfather's before him.  The #1 set, as I understand it, came from my widowed grandmother who ran the family restaurant in the 1940s - 1950s, and made short-term loans to people, taking things like this as collateral.  She believed that method was more civilized than having no collateral and resorting to breaking fingers in order to collect a debt.

How would you advise me to find a replacement jewel for the top of the cap of the vacumatic pen?

Vacumatics came in several sizes, so the length and diameter will help to ID it and the jewel that you will need.

The Dallas Pen Show is in September.  Just give it a week and you will likely have several people chime in to help you out with the jewel

Nice pens! I would suggest not cleaning them yourself. Use the wrong products or do it the wrong way and you lower the value. If you are going to sell them, sell them as-is. If you are going to have them restored to working condition have the person doing the restoration also do any cleaning or polishing they may need.

@FlighterGuy and @Ljcollas Actually, the #2 pen looks like it might be a 3rd Generation Vacumatic from the size and shape of the blind cap at the end of the barrel, so a later model (the difference would be if the the plunger under the blind cap is metal or plastic).

Another site to look at besides parker51.com would be parkercollector.com (although I don't know how updated the articles about the nuances between sizes and models of Vacumatics is).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

  • 2 weeks later...

These are beautiful examples of mid century Parkers! They are definitely valuable enough that I would send them out for repair rather then attempting to DIY.

A striped jewel would be a must for the Vacumatic!

I will reach out to The Write Pen and see if they can help find a suitable jewel for it.  Thanks!
