It would be interesting to see how the backend filling mechanics work.

I’d assumed that it’d be capillary action, like an original Parker 61 or Pelikan ‘Level’ pen - but that video makes it look more like some kind of ‘vacuum filler’ equivalent 🤷‍♂️

Supposedly the final release.

100th year of Meisterstück, and I won't be buying anything.

The green Origin got closest.

Hmm.

How might one flush this pen and nib?

With the bulb that sits to the right of the photo. I assume that you attach the bulb at the back, fill it with water and squeeze. The water will come out the nib?

To me, this rear filler got closest. If it had been $2000 I would have one on order, but not at $5100.

There's definitely pressure that builds from pressing down on the pen into the bottle and then the pressure reverses and pushes the ink back into the pen. The problem with this design is that unless you use the bulb to push the old ink out the nib, you'll end up pulling old ink into the bottle first and your ink in the bottle will age much faster than if you never contaminate it with old ink in the first place like a normal nib filler.

They should sell the demonstrator for $300. I bet they'd sell a lot...

Nomos makes watches with in-house mechanical movements in Germany and sells them for less than Montblanc sells a plastic pen with some PVD gold trim. It's not rididuclous to think it shouldn't cost the same as a Namiki Rakucho does in Japan.

Not sure what you mean? The demonstrator has cheap clear plastic and is mass-produced and the only thing valuable on it is the gold nib. Why should it cost thousands?

I thought you were mocking me for saying I would buy the pen if it had been $2000 instead of $5000 lol

Nope, not mocking. I agree with you that this is a money grab.

Because there are those who are willing to pay that price for this Limited Edition.

Add lightness and simplicate.

@Dankoh69 Thanks for the video, looks great!

The all new travellers Montblanc 100 years of Meisterstuck 149 fountain pen (this demonstrator version is not for sale).  Set of pen, pen pouch along with pump and an adaptor which goes directly on top of the ink bottle.

Thanks for these photos which add detail and insight into this new "100 Years" pen.

I must say, what concerns me the most about this fountain pen is a point made by @JCC123 a few days ago.  In his words, "The problem with this design is that unless you use the bulb to push the old ink out the nib, you'll end up pulling old ink into the bottle first and your ink in the bottle will age much faster than if you never contaminate it with old ink in the first place like a normal nib filler."

Personally, I think the contamination of the ink bottle by the old, residual ink which has been in the barrel since the last fill is a huge error in design.

Price aside (a sum I would never pay) this is more than sufficient reason for me to take a pass on this pen.

I hope they will introduce a version of the 149 with this filling system to the regular line - but not just black. The coral red and the demonstrator are two of the "colors" I suspect would sell faster, so it is a shame that one costs so much and the other is not for sale (to me, the demonstrator has me drooling).

I also hope  that, if they introduce this tio the regular line, the bulb and adapter will be an optional add on (so, if people already have them, they don't need to pay extra for unnecessary items). If they do that, for a decent price and with colors other than black (I don't need a 7th black 149), I'd be in for sure.

As for the current pricing, well, this is capitalism after all, and MB is smart. It is a new design and they need to recover the R&D and new machinery investment. The fastest to way to do that is exactly what they did. And they still have most of the market for their regular pens untouched: those of us who cannot or will not pay $5k for a pen, but like what they see in this one, are still hoping that they will release some version of it at a more reasonable price.

I don't like their pricing (since I can't afford it) and I don't like that two of my most desired colors for a 149 are out of reach for me. But I totally get what they are doing from a commercial point of view.

Edited to add:  By the way, even though I understand the concerns with respect old/used ink in the ink bottle, I think this design addresses a very practical problem: filling a pen with a #9 nib is a tremendous pain in the neck, unless the bottle is absolutely full. This filling system completely eliminates that problem, it would seem.

Thank you for the images and the information.

Difficult to fathom, in my humble opinion, why this contraption has been named the "traveller". The last "traveller", the 147, facilitated travelling with the pen by way of cartridge fill and the leather case that carried 6 cartridges. In this case the ink bottle, plus the adaptor and the pump would be a tricky fit even in a briefcase.

And this quite apart from the fact that the demonstrator, unlike previous MB demonstrators, demonstrates way over the top, with the pen looking desirable to my mind only when it is all filled up. Understandably, it may not be as a great an attraction as the model in coloured resin.

(I hasten to add that I am not in the market for a 5000 euro fountain pen)

I also think the name "Traveler" is somewhat strange, as I prefer to use cartridges for traveling since they are very practical (I always carry my KoP when traveling, which is probably the only occasion I use that pen).

But I also carry a Pilot Custom 823 with a fine nib: due to the large ink capacity and thin line, it lasts forever. So, I can see that this 149 with an EF could be used by some for traveling. But if you need to change ink it is completely impractical and, to my mind, the name is strange.

The bulb and adaptor are di minimus in cost compared to the pen itself but I understand the need to save another $100 or so. We'll have to wait and see how they will price this as I think the regular version after this 100 year edition will still cost an arm and a leg.
