Found this interesting Montblanc 149 ... is it pre-1990? or fake?

This 149 with an M nib crossed my path at a shop in Asia.

The shopkeeper says it's been in his shop since 2000, but the shop is over 40 years old and the warranty card says "West Germany" so it could be pre-1990. The warranty card and papers are obviously very old.

The gift box is really unusual, it's plastic and not leather. On the underside of the gift box it says the box is made in Holland, the lettering is pretty well defined so doesn't feel like a 20 year old fake.

The nib is slightly off-center with respect to the black plastic feed. The nib isn't symmetrical on the top side either, the details don't quite meet at the slot.

There's something weird about the feed as well -- some of the ribs on the left side seem to be cut back.

Barrel ink windows are clear, spaced at some distance to each other, with lots of black plastic/resin in between.

There's no "Pik" engraved under the clip (or anything else).

A serial number or some other text is visible on the clip band but not legible, the engraving might not be very good.

The pen had white stuff under the nib and clip, probably fungus or corrosion from sitting in a humid environment for decades.

What do you guys think... is it real?

I'd say 146 rather than 149, but its not easy to tell from the photos. Does the piston move? - dont force it!

You don't know what you need until you realise you haven't got it.

Split ebonite feed. Seems like a few fins are damaged.
The nib looks genuine, but there is something going on with the engraving.

I got the same box with my 149. Don't know if it is the original one, but surely a Montblanc box at least.

MB nibs are stamped rather than engraved. There is some loss of rhodium plating around the breather hole and the slot is a little asymetric, but looks genuine to me. I guess it's been 'pulled' at some time.

I was thinking that too, either it has been tampered with or badly made, nothing particularly interesting or different about the pen or box.

Hi, i search across the forum and found similar topic, I need someone to help me verify if my newly purchased Montblanc 149 14K  is pre-1990 from Buyee which is with West Germany engraved, but no serial number.   There's no "pix" word below the clip. I used a high lumen LED torch to shine the pen cover, I could barely see wine red black . Are they genuine

Here's some photos for your kind check and verification. Tq.

It does have No. 149 engraved at center band as photo no. 3  above (without Pix word though)

Here's side by side comparison Montblanc No. 149 and Montblanc Mozart Ballpoint (without Pix word behind clip)

Looks like a pre-1990 149. The size of the star in relation to the cap, the size of nib relative to section, and 149 engraving indicate that. The feed is an ebonite split feed. The tip of the nib seems to have been bent but it may be do to picture quality, not sure). What kind of piston mechanism is visible when you unscrew the piston knob? Is it brass or something else?

Looks good, a piston open picture would help.

Thanks @stric75 for your questions, I would take a closer photo  from my phone (not good in macro shot) on the nib, no sign of bended nib as I can write smoothly. How do i check if the piston mechanism is brass or plastic (I have refilled with ink now)?

@stric75 @PAKMAN

here's few photos that I have taken. Can you verify the piston type if it's brass or PVC from the photos. I think the nibs is OK though. No problem in writing.20241112_192815.thumb.jpg.ed489f2114a8d2517c37dc1cb65c4670.jpg

This does look legit. In my opinion, the older MBs are nicer than the newest models, primarily because the nibs were better, but then again, not everyone will agree with that.

Thank you for confirmation as I got this from Buyee approx. USD335 , to check if it's pre-1990 and legitimate montblanc 149.

Quite many feedback on old vs new nibs as well 14K vs 18K nibs . I will spend more time reading forum here as just joined this FPN forum lately.
