Pen/Ink/Paper Trios

Two pens, two inks, one paper:

Both pens are Sailor 1911 Large (M)

Exploring two inks that look very similar - Both are outline inks with good flow

  • Inks are Sailor Manyo Yamabuki and Sailor Shikiori Kin-Mokusei
  • Paper is Tomoe River Sake Notebook - this paper does not bring out the outline effect that you can see on Cosmo Snow and Iroful papers.

Such cheerful colors, @USG! Interesting how different those colors look on Cosmo Snow compared to TR. I’m still looking for another paper that will outline, no news to report on that front yet.

Today I opened my most recent notepad. It’s a whole vibe. The paper is very good. No feathering or ghosting, I could totally use both sides. I definitely want to try this ink in one of my Pelikans.large.IMG_0748.jpeg.4543c5f103a2b8ebb88d62e6ec3fcdce.jpeg

Such sunny colours USG!

I'm surprised at the little difference in actual writing...and I think a bottle of Yamabuki is on my list now. Have you tried R&K Helianthus?
Another one I keep leaning to buy, alas there is always something else before. My latest ink purchase was a total fail (Sailor Storia mix red), I wish I had gotten something else instead.

Very cute notepad Penguincollector!

  Thanks, @Lithium466

I just ordered a bottle of Sailor Shikiori Irori because I have so few red inks. I think you might like it. It’s an orange leaning red.

Earlier today I was fiddling around with the Quasar ink on some Cosmo Snow paper.[Jinhao X159 (M)].  It looked wet after drying for a good 20 minutes so I rubbed it with a tissue.  Not good.  I thought it might be the paper, so I tried it in a Tomoe River A5 Notebook.  Same thing.  Slow dryer.

Later on, my Jun Lai 630 was empty so I cleaned it and loaded some fresh Monteverde Horizon Blue.  CurmudgeonMe didn't like it right away.  Bright Blue Phooey.  I'm going to dump it.

The Colorverse effect looks cool.

Must.  Look.  Away.   I do not need more paper.  I do not need more paper.  I do not need more paper.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I wouldn't bet on that.....

Oh. I had read terrible reviews of the first gen Storia "fire", and hoped the "new" Storia mix "red" would be a decent water resistant red.

Nope. Dry, low lubrication (although that improved with a wetter pen) palish pink. Very lame ink.

That said it was still well behaved, water resistant, and cleaned easily without staining my empty cartridge for the few hours it spent there.

It went directly in the pile of "art" inks.

Today’s trio is a Mead Steno Pad from 1986, a Sheaffer TRZ, and Parker Quink Permanent Red. Judging from what else is in here, this must’ve been the notebook next to the kitchen phone (harvest gold, with the loooong curly cord) when I was about 10. I wonder how I ended up with it. large.IMG_0750.jpeg.df139d45096729f031813113d886f5cd.jpeg

@Sailor Kenshin, here’s a link- it comes in various sizes and lined, blank, or dot. I bought the dot and blank in A5. They were cheap and cheerful, shipping is free with  $10 in Choice items, coin discounts apply if you use the app.

I just  went with using the line as a margin. Seemed intuitive. I was reading that it was designed so that a stenographer could write faster since they wouldn’t have to move their hand as much.

That was so nice.....  your father's pen, right?  Perfect ink for it. 😀👍

I wish my long hand was as legible as yours...

Today I got another Jun Lai 630 (M) in the mail.  I love these pens.  Curiously, the nibs are ground for ultra smooth reverse writing.

The writing is from a sample of J Herbin Emerald of Chivor on Cosmo Snow paper.

It's a saturated green ink that outlines with shimmer.

It was hard to keep the shimmer suspended in the ink sample and the shading & colors to show, but when they did, it looked like this:

I wasn't going to include this pic on Tomoe River 68gsm because it was so blah, but here it is anyway......

Jun Lai 630

I didn’t realize that they had another name until just now. I have heard them called Lucky, WingSung, and YongSheng. I think they make my favorite upper tier Chinese pens (Chren and Yiren make my favorite school pens). I haven’t tried that model yet, but I have it on my “to buy” list.

 This sample is beautiful!

Thanks for the compliment, it is my dad’s pen. I also really love Pelikan/ Cross Blue- Black, it’s my favorite of the IG inks besides the old Quink.
