Have you ever tried ice skating? Now you can replicate the sensation with pen, paper & ink:

As always, please forgive the lighting; the ink is definitely blue-grey as attested by @yazeh in his excellent review:

Forgot to add that the nib on this Pelikan M101N is a 14K <EF> 😶

@Penguincollector  I'm looking for a substantial ink for use in an EF pen.  Any Suggestions?  I eye dropper-ed some Jack Frost from the top of the bottle thinking that it would be very dark, but it came out  a light turquoise from the EF nib.

@Bo Bo Olson Gotta give credit where credit is due.  I was reading some old posts and you were discussing polishing nibs with brown paper bag material.  I've done that.  But then you said that all brown paper bags are not the same and better polishing is obtained from high quality brown bag material.  I never thought about it but I tried it with some very dense brown paper bag material and I agree with you, not all brown paper bags are equal. 😀👍

What pen?  Does it like wet or dry ink? Do you have a color preference?

See above, I added some information.

The pen is one of my many Jinhao X159s with an EF nib.  I'm going to say it's on the dry side because if I increase the flow I'll also increase the line width and I want to keep it a fine as possible.

Color:  something in the dark blue family.

Is blue black too dark? I love 4001 bb. I also thought Diamine China Blue, or Dominant Industry Lapis Lazuli (shimmer). I’m trying to come up with a dry version of PR American Blue. I will consult the oracle- er inkswatch.

I have China blue but it doesn't look dark enough.  I also have American Blue and if I didn't already have it in a couple of pens it might be a good candidate, as would Monteverde Horizon Blue, but I have that in a couple of pens too.  I don't care if the ink is wet or dry as long as it makes a nice dark line that doesn't look black, like Diamine Bilberry, for instance.

Diamine Majestic Blue might work, or Taccia Ao. Both are gorgeous deep blues with a red sheen.

There was a time when Micro mesh was scarce (yep)....that and there hadn't been enough info screamed at us, go to the beauty shop and buy $$ nail buffers....so we were left with the brown paper bags...of good quality. (those were actually scarce inthe States....but I had good brown paper bags from Ikea, here in Germany.

...........

They were not good enough to make a nib butter smooth, but did remove sat in the drawer for a generation or two's drag. Good and smooth was achieved.

................

I've not used a brown paper bag since I ordered the buff set, with micro mesh & a buff sick and two levels of laping sheets, from Richard Binder.

Since then, and this year I learned....

You can wash your buff stick!!!!

It's not back to brand new, but close enough.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

I think you already have one of my favourite, J. Herbin Bleu des profondeurs?

Or well Diamine Blue Velvet, but that could be reheated for you (can't remember) 🤔 I mean there's always good old Platinum blue black that is nicely lubricated, but that might lack some substance maybe. There are some nice things in the Kuretake lineup, Shimbashi Iro might be too light but it's a very nice ink. And I usually hate blue/greens.
On the violet side, PR Tanzanite (much better than Cosmic Cobalt IMO) or possibly Sailor Ink studio 743 (I really should get a bottle of that). In the 74x range you might find something that suits your colour taste, I only tried the 743 and it was nicely lubricated too.

Oh, Taccia Ruri, if Ao is too purple for you.

Graphilo is hands down the best paper I'm using, and I've tried a few. That said, it's very expensive: this 64 (!) page notebook single signature cahier, comes down to ~0,20€ per page!

Not at all, your pics are much better than mine in representing the actual properties of inks & paper. Just different departures, I guess 🙂

Not with a pen NEARLY as nice as that one, but in my first Parker 45 (found in the wild in a small antiques shop in a town in NW Pennsylvania), which had a 14K M nib?  Using modern Quink Black in that pen was that kind of feel on the page....

That was my first semi-vintage pen and my first pen with a gold nib, and IIRC I paid a little under $11 US for it (it was the only pen in a box on the table across from the front door where I recognized the brand -- I was still that new to FPN at that point, that I didn't even know what model it was until I posted pix on the Parker Forum).

I’ve wondered about it, but it’s often sold out in my usual shop. I’ll have to try it when I see it in stock.

Thank you Lithium, those suggestions are wonderful, especially the 743 and the Ruri.  They look so nice and bright.  I'm going to order some samples.

I'm curious, which blue-greens bother you?

Did you get any of the pens we discussed a number of months ago?

@Penguincollector too,

Meanwhile here's an update on my adventures with the JunL 630 <AU>.  They resolved the dispute but didn't offer an exchange, only money back, so I kept the pen and adjusted it myself.  Then I spent a few days trying to find an ink for it and ended up (temporarily) with Waterman Blue <modern>.  I don't know if anyone else noticed but 2 year old Waterman Blue shades nicely while my vintage WB does not.  Did Waterman add something to the formula to improve shading?

Anyway, while I was checking out inks for my EF pen and the new 630<AU> I noticed that Amazon was selling the 629<AU> for less than on Aliexpress, and I ordered it.  It arrived quickly and really like this little pen.  I ordered a Medium knowing it was going to write like a Fine.  It's a fabulous writer.  It has about the same pencil feedback and softness as my Sailor 1911Ls and is just so much fun to write with.  The only problem is that changing inks is an ordeal.  It doesn't have a screw in nib collar like the larger 630 or a removable section, so you can't access it from the front.  The only way to flush the pen is to remove the plastic piston assembly which I don't like to doing as often as I like changing inks.  So what this means is that I'll have to dip the pen until I find a suitable ink and then stick with that, (which I do for a lot of my favorite pens).  I've gone through 10 inks and haven't found one to stick with.  It currently has Edelstein Sapphire but I'm going to try Lithium's suggestions of 743 and the Ruri.
