Here the pen/ink/paper combo of today. To be precise: it is the pen + ink of the whole February and only the paper of today.

Pen: Pineider Arco Desert Beetle EF

Ink: Colorverse Crab Nebula

Paper: Neusiedler Japan Post 70gsm (residual stock from 1970)

Text: first chapter of "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" from The Blue Fairy Book by Andrew Lang.

What's so special about this combo?

The Pineider pen is so-so, quite OK but not great. It combines well with the Colorverse ink but struggles to deliver a fine sharp edged line on paper with rough surface. The EF nib is a real EF and soft with a tiny bit line width but with remarkable ink delivery variation, resulting in unsteady line appearance on rough paper types. This Neusiedler has a smooth surface - but even here it is difficult to keep the line at constant colour intensity. This is my daily challenge, still not mastered it! ;)

I grew up reading that fairy tale! I married a Norwegian 🤔

Here’s my super messy attempt at writing with my oblique nib holder. I don’t love this combo, will have to try it with a straight holder. The paper was a bit more absorbent than I like with this ink. large.IMG_0729.jpeg.08cde4dfa696def45829b9d99c17ebe4.jpeg

Previously I complained that all my notebooks, except the Iroful and Tomoe River had paper that feathered with my favorite Iroshizuku inks, Sailor inks, Monteverde inks, and Edelstein inks. (I also have a big fat LIFE notebook with nasty yellow pages that I never use)

Notebooks are:

  • 104|Mnemosyne, B5
  • APICA Twin Ring W, B5
  • Kokuyo  Soft Ring 80 B5
  • Stalogy 016 B5
  • Kokuyo Campus 4W-M 40 B5
  • Maruman 'spiralnote' A5
  • Sakae Tomoe River A5
  • Sakae Iroful A5

Here are 6 inks that did not feather on the paper in the Mnemosyne B5 notebook today.

  • Lamy 2K (OM) - PR American Blue
  • Pelikan M1000 (F) - Pelikan Brillant Braun
  • Pelikan M800 (M) - Diamine Polar Glow
  • Pelikan M800 (F) - Edelstein Sapphire
  • Wing Sung 630 (M) - Pelikan Blau-Schwarz

Earlier today I was fiddling around with the Quasar ink on some Cosmo Snow paper.[Jinhao X159 (M)].  It looked wet after drying for a good 20 minutes so I rubbed it with a tissue.  Not good.  I thought it might be the paper, so I tried it in a Tomoe River A5 Notebook.  Same thing.  Slow dryer.

Later on, my Jun Lai 630 was empty so I cleaned it and loaded some fresh Monteverde Horizon Blue.  CurmudgeonMe didn't like it right away.  Bright Blue Phooey.  I'm going to dump it.

20 minutes and still not dry:huh:...looks like that heads into the legendary Private Reserve neighborhood.

My slowest drying ink is Noodler's Golden Brown....shades well..., to write on the back of a page, one has to write a full other page. Not bad if one want's to go, 1-3, 2-4. :headsmack:

For this week the Stipula La22 is my workhorse pen, filled with Scribo Blu cosmico.

Paper of the day is another random conference notepad.

image.thumb.jpeg.ee9e0ba42e03fb17d423ab6c5297a731.jpeg

The paper of this trio is not special, it demonstrates that you may get better paper by chance at a conference than buying an unbranded pad in the shop. Pen and ink are special as I love this Stipula pen in any way: it is small, heavy and has a 1.5 mL ink window. ;) :)  The Scribo ink is a beautiful blue-black-black that behaves quite well as it has a medium-range surface tension and comparably high viscosity. The pen/ink combo therefore allows crisp, well defined lines on almost any writing paper type.

PS: I observe a strange max file size limit for the images, it decreases with every posting I do. Last time it was 1 MB, today it is 530 kB. I had to reduce the resolution drastically

That may be because you are uploading them as attachments. Instead, you should create an album, upload them to the album, and then insert the URL of the image in the album inside your post (will be displayed automatically as image).

I use Imgur which is free.

Today:  2 pens, 2 inks, 3 papers

Two more inks that looked very similar online.  The samples were: Organics Studio's Ralph Waldo Emerson and Santiago's Sea Blue.  The Emerson leans blue and the Santiago leans green.  They both were hard starting and very concentrated.  Once they got started, writing was smooth and uneventful.  Both inks were wet and flowed back and forth in the converter without displaying a surface tension problem.  Pens were Jinhao X159s (M) 2nd Generation, but only 2 out of the 4 the finials were removable.  The Nibs were slightly adjusted to increase flow.

The Santiago ink showed some outlining.

The papers were Iroful 75gsm, Cosmo Snow 75gsm and Tomoe River S 52gsm.

One of today's trios was a Jinhao 992 with a fude nib (from a broken Hero pen) and Pilot Black. It's  a favourite drawing pen that lives in a small sketch kit because it seals well enough to be forgotten and still work when I remember where I left it.

I like the nib because it can put down a very fine line, but go thick when I want it to.

The paper is 210gsm Draw & Wash  - cartridge paper that's sized to take a little water without going wonky.

That's great. Good to know about pens that have a tight seal. But we are bound in honour to never forget our pens!  :)

I guess the fude has an advantage over a flex nib as it doesn't tend to flood the thicker line, isn't it?

Ah! Thank you, @txomsy. Now I see that I used almost all of my attachment space. :( I guess, when I delete images from there, they will disappear from the posts.

Meh, that's bad.

I will try to find a solution.

I didn’t get around to posting last night, because it was late, but we’re pen twins (for now, as this pen belongs to the pen club, I just stubbed it for the Hub later)! large.IMG_4545.jpeg.7d75dcb48beee595a4ca4432a7a99b8f.jpeg

I have a few more remarks for a couple of other posts on this thread, but I have a ton of housework to do, so I’ll come back around for more discussion. I also have yet to write  anything but my chore list today.
