Pen/Ink/Paper Trios

Penguincollector

Recommended Posts

All inks I don't have. Inks that will have to wait to next year. Two new glasses, a big November auction with lots of high classed pens, pens to repair...those little reddish coins are called pennies by the way.

Some nice poster is sending me some Japanese and other papers, some of which will let ink sheen. Got to find the list of sheening inks.

if my same inks are not too old, from before they reformulated for sheen. Or, old inks that only sheened on Japanese paper.

Inks suddenly have become complicated.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

I didn't know that ink, looked it up.  It translates to Anchor Rust.  "Mountian" calls it a light, peachy pink.  Your sample looks more orange-rusty....  So what color is it?  Peachy pink or Rust?

😀

I'd scientifically call it "Porky Pink" 😛

I get distracted easily....  I was in the middle of posting some inks that sheened on Southworth paper when I got distracted with another project.

I have a ton of paper, in the form of loose sheets.  My MO is to cut the A4 sheets into A5 and use a small clip board.

Last year I bought a 'thin" APICA B5 Twin Ring notebook and I was spoiled.

74499.jpg?ba=middle,center&balph=3&blend

It was nice and thin, 30 pages, easy to write in and the pages flipped right around to the back.  Just what I wanted except I didn't like the paper.  What I really wanted was the exact same thing with Cosmo Snow, Iroful and Tomoe River paper.

So I bought a Wire Binding Machine and I'm going to make my own notebooks.

I had no idea how to use the machine so I started with some 8.5X11 HP 24lb paper and experimented.  It turned out to be easy once I got things lined up.  I made one large 'thin' notebook (25pages) as a learning exercise.  Next are going to be the 'thin' A5 sized Twin Ring notebooks I've been looking for and never can find with Cosmo Snow, Iroful and Tomoe River paper.

The notebook binding machine is a game changer! That’s amazing! It looks really fun, and you get exactly what you want.  Nice!  Bilberry looks like it sheens brown on my screen.

Thanks for saying nice things about my penguin scratches.

😁
I’d certainly vote for your description of the ink’s colour over the name given to it by Herbin!

That ain’t the colour of any rust that I’ve ever seen!

I wondered whether the notorious Herbin Reformulation of ~2012 had changed/ruined this ink’s colour (as it did to Poussière de Lune), but it seems that ‘Rouille d’Ancre’ has never actually looked like Anchor Rust 🤷‍♂️

I made my highly qualified 🙃 proposition re: naming this ink a couple of weeks ago:

I also conveniently translated it for them in French, and even came up with an appropriate punchy name for the US market 😛

@USG Love your new sub hobby - those notebooks remind me of MUJI- but wow, the TR #9 is so bad. Is it like that with drier inks or just wet ones like Pilot and PR?

Those 4 feathered out of the 15 inks on the page.  Probably the wet penetrating inks are the most prone.    Also, did you notice the lable on the Yamamoto Tomoe River paper?  It said Tomoe River White, and sure enough it's whiter than the Tomoe River S I have from Jetpens.  It also has a harder surface feel than regular Tomoe River.

The other thing I noticed is that Jack Frost looks good on almost any paper. 😀

Anyway, I'm working my way up to better paper but I wanted get the hang of it with stuff I don't use often.

I really need to buy a bottles of Jack Frost and Polar Glow. I still have samples left but they are getting close. I always put off ordering them because they are so much cheaper in England, but then forget to add them to my order.

Working with the not so great paper is smart. Eventually it will become second nature and then you can use the good stuff.

I have the TR #9 in a Paper Penguin notebook . It is whiter than other TR, and even Kin Kaku Den Super White.  It’s also very stiff.

I bought it from Yamamoto in Japan.  It was labeled 'Tomoe River Notebook White', and the translation said #9 Papermaking Machine.

@XYZZY thank you for the utility

And I made a mistake with the inks.  The Visconti Ragtime had Iroshizuku Ama-Iro, not PR Naples.

I have that same Paper Penguin notebook but haven't used it yet.  And yes, apparently some of the the paper from machine #9 is whiter and stiffer than some of the other paper (I have) from machine #9, which is practically indistinguishable from Tomoe River S, except that it feathers.  (But I'll have to go back and revisit both  those papers to be sure)

Polar Glow is a very nice sheening ink but Jack Frost has a little more personality because of the shimmer. 😀

EDIT:

I was wrong about the Paper Penguin paper... this is what I have:

I think the color is a combination of things.  (1) The ink has been in the pen for a while so it's probably concentrated. (2) I didn't write with it very much so the ink the sample was written with has been sitting in the feed, so concentrated and oxidized.   (3) The Ragtime has a wet flow and a generous medium nib.

Hmm, now I want to try this. However, I have a hard time not using any pen loaded with Ama-Iro. It’s a favorite.

So I made my 3rd notebook...  This one has A5 Cosmo Snow from JetP.

The first thing I noticed was that the ink line spread out wider than the Cosmo Snow I cut from A4 sheets and Iroful in both A4 sheet and A5 notebook.  Other than that, it shaded sheened and outlined like regular Cosmo Snow.

@USG does the notebook maker you got perforate the paper?  Just curious.

For ink testing, personally, I’d see no need to be able to cleanly remove pages.
