De Atramentis Document Blue Grey

De Atramentis Document Blue Grey (formerly Document Fog Grey)

According to Vanness this was formerly Document Fog Grey.

Another Document ink by De Atramentis, with an uninspired name. Ink has below average lubrication, is wet with very fast dry times on Rhodia. Ironically I most enjoyed writing/ sketching with the Japanese Ef nib. I would say, it’s a better option than Akkerman #09 Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indigo.

Cleaning was easy but for longer use you might need a pen flush nearby. Chroma is interesting, purple at the core and lighter blue at the edges.

It's also a fast drying ink, so it's good for lefties on Rhodia. :)

and finally an artwork. Lady sings the Blues...

·      Pens used: Pilot Kakuno Ef, Lamy (EF/F/M/B, 1.1), Kanwrite with an Ahab nib

·      What I liked: Sketching and writing with a Japanese Ef nib.

·      What I did not like: The ink didn’t sing for me. Too wet, low lubrication and long name.

·       What some might not like: It’s pigment ink.

·      Shading: Not much.

·      Ghosting: With wet flex nib.

·      Bleed through: Same as above.

·      Flow Rate: Wet

·      Lubrication: Below average.

·      Nib Dry-out: Did not notice.

·      Start-up: No.

·      Saturation: Not really.

·      Shading Potential:

·      Sheen: Did not notice.

·      Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Did not notice.

·      Nib Creep / “Crud”: Did not notice.

·      Staining (pen): Did not notice.

·      Clogging: No.

·      Cleaning: Easy for a pigment ink, though having a cleaning solution would be wise.

·      Water resistance: Excellent.

·      Availability: 45 ml bottles.

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier  :)

Hmmm.... could have sworn that you hit this ink a day or 2 ago. But no, it does tend to have a few picograms less green in it than the Laan van did, and yes, DeA does seem to keep on budging in one very similar colour after the other, just with different namings......

Yes but finally an ink with no sales and marketing team that builds a backstory of "inspiration" around the name.

Thank you for the fun cat pics!

I'm not sure (because I'm not the guy naming the inks :) ), but I think this used to be Document Fog Grey, but people were confused by there being a Document Fog Grey and a (non-Document) Fog Grey, and so the Document version got a name change.  (But I could be all wrong about this - neither is on the De Atramentis website any more.)

The chroma is very nice.  The ink color in the images is very nice. :D  I've added it to my list (and removed DAD Fog Grey...).

Poor swatch kitty has a black eye! ;) Aww. Poor broken-hearted water test kitty.  Kind of him to hold the umbrella for his friend. :)  Is little Mousey playing the blues? :)  Sketch-kitty looks to be holding her breath!

Thank you for another thorough and fun review!

I like to do similar inks in batches from time to time :)

They have quite a bit of inks with backstory, only the document ones are a bit boring :)

I try different things and when it's more or less acceptable, I'm done. So you can interpret it as you please :D

Poor Akkerman :D

:angry: I will still be replacing my Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indigo next time I order from Vanness - I spent far too long memorizing how to spell that name to give it up now! :P (No, seriously, it's perfect from my VP - the two are now mated for life.)

Fog Gray is a much cooler name!

But poor sad Kitteh.  The Blues can bring us to tears.

I dunno about this ink, though.  Low lubrication, yet a color group I like.  Fence-sitting, me?

Many thanks to you, @yazeh, for bringing ink reviews to life.  Keep 'em coming!

Thank you, @yazeh, for this comprehensive review! I like the ink colour as it looks like in all line widths (except the 1.1mm on Rhodia, an outlier?) and in the drawing.

All the deAtramentis inks I own so far have low surface tension, tend to flood the paper and mark any second tier paper by extensive feathering and bleed. The limited use in dry writing pens or with EF nibs keeps me from buying more of those inks. I consider making an exception with this colour, btw. ;)

Cat looks a little dismayed - because she brought the umbrella without any need? However, cat and mouse have grown with their job and seem to be more than colleagues for water testing; they look like being friends already. :)

One life!

Thanks to the recent review of that ink, I dug my bottle out, and it's now gracing the converter in my dark blue Parker 45 Arrow with the OF nib.  As for this ink, I apparently picked up samples of both the regular Fog Grey and the Document Fog Grey at some point, but haven't tried the Document version. Had to dig through my testing notebooks just now to see what I thought of the regular Fog Grey (and apparently liked it, including the fact that it had pretty good water resistance) but of course will still have to try the Document Fog Grey at some point.

It could be a flow issue, as it has some. And you know better than I that stubs behave very much different from B or M nibs. Something about spreading the ink to say it very unscientifically  ;)

The paper is super absorbent and textured...

I would say this is the opposite. If I understand well, it's dryish ink, and has a much higher surface tension than lets say Document Cyan/ Turquoise (two of the most awful inks be De Atramentis). Honesty if I'm going for this colour I would prefer a good old fashioned IG blue black :) Like good old Essri or Büroservice Bergmann....

Thanks for the lovely review. I haven’t tried any inks from DA but am tempted by the colour of this one. I really like it. Might give it a try… just to get a feel for these DA Dokument inks.
Great cat pic btw… melancholy is obvious. Nicely done!
