Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diplomat Orchid

This is review #270 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This is a sort of fuchsia or magenta pink, bright and bold.  Dry time in test was under 5 seconds.  In the review, it was more than 20 (RH was 33%, maybe that's why).  I added them together because 25 seconds is about as meaningless as every other possibility. :\ (And yes, in the video, I should have written <5 sec, not >5 sec.)

Cleaning may require a few extra flushes, soaking, or pen flush - like most pinks, it's a little clingy, though far less than some pinks.

This color was really hard to capture.  My images don't match what my eyes see.  The best image I've found is the swatch card from Atlas Stationers- the color from my pen is from around the middle of the swab, where the color just starts to lighten.  Other images I found online were like mine - too pink!

Zoomed in photo (Color is all wrong and the shading too prominent. It needs to be less pink and more magenta, but I can't figure out how to correct it.)

Screenshot (Not too bad. It's a little too dark, but I think this is actually closest to what my eyes see.)

Scan of Completed Review (This is the close. (Hooray for cat hairs on the scanner!))

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (AP: Too pale, not bold enough. CP: Not quite as bad, but not good)
large.DiplomatOrchidAP.jpg.1989a6c23385c975553b7efe9c8fadfc.jpg

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 321µm. With 270 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.) (Strangely, this might give the best idea of the color, though it's not entirely correct.)

Microscope image (400x. Color is wrong, but I think the little "flower" and the bars are what make the gold sheen.)

Nice colour, and hooray for the staff thinking it's time to link!  I'm eager to see what new possibilities that opens up for our intrepid friends.

@LizEF Interesting color.  I wonder how it compares to Noodler's Grinch Garnet, which I just got recently.

Daisy, daisy, flying into the wind…. Would this be a Staff Loves Me, Loves Me Not moment? 😉

Bright, pretty color.  I have had similar colors in the past, sample vials, like DA Goat (and does DA make a Fuschia?), but of my current stock InkVent Jingleberry is close.  It's in a Lamy Nexx now.

Great change of 'scenery' and moving on to the next arc.  Love La Staff's exit line.  Cracked me up.  🤣

Thanks, @LizEF, for making Tuesdays fun and special.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:) Afraid I wouldn't know, and online image comparisons are, well, iffy.

:) DA makes a Document Fuchsia - possibly the best in the Document ink series, IMO, just because it's very "in your face" and I like the idea of using such a color to sign legal documents (even though I never have). :D

That sooooo sounds like something Amberlea Davis would do -- she uses Noodler's Bay State Blue a lot, and also really likes lipstick reds.

Thanks for an into your face review @LizEF  :D

I have to admit I love the colour in flowers but not so much in ink ;)

I love where the story line is going. You seem to have a created enough elements for a mystical journey

Thanks for making this Tuesday so magical 🙏

When I saw the microscopy, I thought, "Ooh, pretty!" And then when I reviewed the color again, all I could think was, "Barbie Doll BubbleGum finger nail polish." Not that this is a bad thing. I just suddenly have the compulsion to read anything written in this ink with the voice of Margot Robbie now.

  Read my comments and follow the link to Atlas Stationers - my pictures are far too pink, as are most of those I see online.  This is magenta or fuchsia, not pink pink.

Seriously, read the notes and follow the link.  This ink is definitely not Barbie or bubble gum pink.

I know you tried to point us to the darker color, but even then, like some Plum ink that I got from Private Reserve a while back, this still sits into the "neon" camp for me. I actually do honestly like the color, but it has the same sort of energy as a lot of friends I grew up with who really had this sort of stereotypical energy almost to the point where this sort of color glowed off them. I think I only had one friend who I can remember that really manifested "actual bubblegum pink" energy, but there were plenty others who had a little deeper tones to their lives and still kind of skated the whole bubblegum energy.

I think this would be a really neat ink to use in a contrasting calligraphy piece where you use a very strict, harsh textualis and then use splatter and some modern art liberties to flourish the whole thing. This is the sort of ink that I think would look great writ large with a Pilot Parallel.

I don't consider bubblegum pink to be a neon color, but Diplomat Orchid would qualify for neon, I think.

Agree, would look great!

Thank you, @LizEF, for this Tuesday review, for letting the magic staff taking over, for the exciting microscopy and for the cat's hair in the scan!

Some years ago, I used to be completely caught up in the magenta and fuchsia ink color range. But it doesn't take too long for me to get tired of the color. Violet and petrol are easier on the eyes in the long term. :D

Yes, this is a color that needs to be used sparingly.

I wonder if there's a "mechanical" reason for that - if our eyes react to certain colors, or if it's all in our heads. :)
