If you had $1000 to spend on one pen right now...

I've been eyeing that Pelikan M800 Brown Tortoise 2013 Special Edition at Rick Propas' site for a while now. Poof, grand spent.

Really wish I bought one a few years ago when they were half that price.

For two pens I'd complete my Pelikan M101N set with the last two Special Editions I don't have yet. I found a vendor with the matching IB factory fresh nibs, so I already know where I'd send the cash.

I think it may be time for me to stop my recreational shopping.

Pens themselves being opinionated in their design, I feel like Pelikan people are my people.

I would go a little bit over and get the MB Glacier Doué.

Interesting choice. It's beautiful.

I’m a sucker for a blue pen. Add a silver cap and game over. I’m saving it for a milestone birthday.

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Pelikan M300 CIF, Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Sheaffer 3-25 EF ringtop, Skrip Black

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

I have the same thing with green and gold. I've been eyeing the Leonardo Momento Zero Grandes for a milestone birthaversarypromotionfitnessgoalmet.

Or to look at things a different way, I would maybe be happy to spend that to get back my 1970s Parker New Slimfold. My first fountain pen, which I got when I was probably 14 or 15. I don't  know what happened to it - I think it was probably thrown out in one of my Mum's clear-outs, sometime after I'd left home. I lost a lot of stuff that way. She never thought to ask whether I wanted things, before chucking them. But if I could get that pen back (That Pen - not another of the same type) maybe I'd pay the $1000.

I don't think anyone would ever consider a New Slimfold to be worth $1000, but sentiment has a value of its own.

Sentiment certainly does have a value of it's own. I have one pen that has an transitive sentimental value. It's a Sheaffer Balance, green stripes, no white dot, not oversized, fine firm nib, wasn't expensive. But it writes really nicely in its own way, and it perfectly matches a pencil that was my grandfather's that has traveled around the world with me. I use it to write in my Hobonichi Weeks planner, where I have to write very small. Those two things together are my most "valuable" writing instruments.

... and I'd blow the other $310 on ink.

In the immortal words of George Best, “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.”

Ah, I think this is also sensible. Gold has actual value (at least as far as commodities go), even if it's only gold filled. When I think about some of the other pens at that price point, especially the modern ones, I have a hard time understanding where the value is. Maybe it is unique or beautiful or takes a long time to make. But, like, the regular Montblanc Meisterstruck, for example. What makes that worth the price? When I sit down to write with it, what will make me glad I spent my money there? If the only value is that it's a recognizable luxury brand name, then I don't think I would find that inspiring. Absolutely no shade to MB lovers out there. Love is love.

  1. A Pilot Ishime urushi pen (in any of the four colours, although Green would rank first and Black would rank last as my choice) with F nib — that's “the pen that got away” from my viewpoint.
  2. A Platinum Izumo that isn't one of the single-coloured Tamenuri. The matt Tagayasan is fine, but I wouldn't say no to one of the fancier ones.

Oh, yeah. These are works of art.

...which would be your top two choices?

I'm not sure I could force myself to pay that much for a pen, but a Montblanc 149 would be it.

Second choice, some Sailor pen I suppose.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Those are so pretty. I have been eyeing the green Nettuno button filler with gold trim. I almost got it for Xmas, but my grail Namiki was on sale.

Oh, yes. I've had my eye on that Nettuno as well. Italian pen makers get me.

Sometimes you're just meant to have a pen. I feel the same way about my MB146 Bordeaux. Perfectly matched a ballpoint that I inherited from my father-in-law, despite the fact that they are both discontinued models we got independently years ago. It's one of  my daily carries. Just looking at it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. He was a good guy.

MB Meisterstuck 149 LeGrand Platinum with ... probably a fine nib. I have the rollerball, ballpoint and pencil, and I'd like to complete the set before I kick the bucket.

Top choice would be a Yard-o-Led Viceroy Victorian Standard.  Runner up?  Probably a Pelikan M620 Piccadilly Circus.  Not sure what nib width I would pick for either.

Mind you, I could NOT afford both of them -- it would be an either/or situation (because with a gold nib, the Viceroy Victorian would blow that 1K mad money purchase all on its own... :o).

Yard-O-Led was the first thought but I'd pick the Grand.

n+1

I kept waiting for the price of 620 The Grand Place, to drop. It never did.:crybaby:

The other similar 800's were too expensive and I don't care for the 800, which for me is a clunky pen. (I do have two, a W.Germany and a 2000something 805.)

I’ve been jonesing for a second Pilot Custom Urushi.  But it really bothers me that even with ordering from Japan to avoid the silly US prices it would still use most of that $1000, perhaps all of it after shipping and import duty.

I’m a bit jealous of those of you who got a fountain pen from a family member. None of mine had such a pen. All I could do was look in my Dad’s desk drawer, and claim a work mechanical pencil. There were three, so I gave the other two to my brothers. But to have a fountain pen a parent or grandparent used, that would be wonderful.

Back in the day of the mid-50's, we had the family Snorkel...A One Pen Family. Then one day, to my absolute shock, in I can still remember those two minutes distinctly even to this day,  my father stopped carrying our Snorkel, in black Skillcraft ball points were free to government workers....so now we know the rest of the story.

The Government tried to kill off fountain pens.

Now you're making me think of the old Paul Harvey radio bits:  "The Rest of the Story"....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

My Mom worked for the government for a time, so I know of those Skilcraft pens. Made in the USA, those.

My Dad’s mechanical pencils had his employer’s name Procter & Gamble.
