Top choice would be a Yard-o-Led Viceroy Victorian Standard.  Runner up?  Probably a Pelikan M620 Piccadilly Circus.  Not sure what nib width I would pick for either.

Mind you, I could NOT afford both of them -- it would be an either/or situation (because with a gold nib, the Viceroy Victorian would blow that 1K mad money purchase all on its own... :o).

I would go a little bit over and get the MB Glacier Doué.

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Pelikan M300 CIF, Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Sheaffer 3-25 EF ringtop, Skrip Black

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

Pilot 742 FA, Namiki Purple cartridge

... and I'd blow the other $310 on ink.

I would choose a very pretty Sailor pen - one of the tea time ones perhaps, or the four seasons, they're all lovely - with a medium or broad nib customised to be a nice fine italic for everyday writing.

Will work for pens...

  1. A Pilot Ishime urushi pen (in any of the four colours, although Green would rank first and Black would rank last as my choice) with F nib — that's “the pen that got away” from my viewpoint.
  2. A Platinum Izumo that isn't one of the single-coloured Tamenuri. The matt Tagayasan is fine, but I wouldn't say no to one of the fancier ones.

Parker 51 Vac first year in cedar blue with end jewel and "wedding band" cap.  Maybe spend the other half on something that strikes my fancy later.

I've been eyeing that Pelikan M800 Brown Tortoise 2013 Special Edition at Rick Propas' site for a while now. Poof, grand spent.

Really wish I bought one a few years ago when they were half that price.

For two pens I'd complete my Pelikan M101N set with the last two Special Editions I don't have yet. I found a vendor with the matching IB factory fresh nibs, so I already know where I'd send the cash.

I think it may be time for me to stop my recreational shopping.

A late '30s- early 40's Pelikan full tortoise 100N-101N.

They won't cost that much but wishing for $500 is the same in my boat as wishing for $1,000...the extra would be for a 400 sea green tortoise.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

1. Platinum 3776 for about $150

2. A nice holiday for $850

I love this answer.

I don’t have one pen I want that would cost the whole $1000.  I’d spend it on several custom Edison pens like the Comet.  I’d have to research what other version I’d like. The Glenmont comes to mind.  I have a Menlo and Beaumont.  The Beaumont is in my top 5 pens.

I'd probably go for Sailor Pro Gear Slim, and pocket the rest of the money.

I don't think there is any need to spend a  thousand dollars (or Pounds or Euros) on a pen

Or to look at things a different way, I would maybe be happy to spend that to get back my 1970s Parker New Slimfold. My first fountain pen, which I got when I was probably 14 or 15. I don't  know what happened to it - I think it was probably thrown out in one of my Mum's clear-outs, sometime after I'd left home. I lost a lot of stuff that way. She never thought to ask whether I wanted things, before chucking them. But if I could get that pen back (That Pen - not another of the same type) maybe I'd pay the $1000.

I don't think anyone would ever consider a New Slimfold to be worth $1000, but sentiment has a value of its own.

This idea has me on the hunt. So far nothing has come close to my Pelikan 400NN.

Sensible advice. You're probably right. It makes me think about how even the act of fantasizing about things we would like to own creates tension and craving, and these things are just distractions. A more expensive pen is not going to solve the problem of the blank page. 😇
