Shopping in your own stash

@AmandaW

As you know, @DilettanteG inspired me to take photos.  I love shopping in my cabinets. I admit, I went to the Colorado Pen Show and found very few inks that I didn't already own the ink in that color (if I liked that color).  My collection has very few bottles of black and turquoise because I don't really use those colors.  But retina-searing inks abound!  I like your idea of organizing a display.  I'd love to see the pictures.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

My inks are here and there. Not easily accessible, except for the inks in the basement. I love @AmandaW’s plan.

Interesting that turquoise inks are not @amberleadavis ‘s preferred color. I have a lot of those. But that’s the thing. We all like different pens and ink colors for different reasons. Variety!

I'm hoping the stands will become the place for my 'currently inked', prompting me to use and refresh. The inks, likewise, will get rotated with others. It won't have all my things, just a curated selection that I want to remind myself to use.

Ooh, I really like this idea. I have to buy a new desk and I need places to put things, and a display on a floating shelf or cabinet that gets some rotation sounds fun. There are also pens and ink that never seem to make it past a mental note to use, so having a landing spot for the “next man up” is a good thing.

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Pelikan M300 CIF, Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Sheaffer 3-25 EF ringtop, Skrip Black

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

My favorite dress shop was Mom's closet.  She was very well-dressed and I miss her style.

Mine too. I still have a few vintage pieces from both of my parents’ wardrobes.

I had bought 9 nibs when Birmingham Pens had a sale on Nemosine stub nibs.  One candidate for a #6 nib is the Jinhao x750 Shimmering Sands. I got it out of the pens needing to be cleaned sack. Got the nib and converter mostly clear. Swapped nibs from a M nib to a 1.1 mm stub. When I was deciding on an ink, I saw the pen under a hallway light, and it shimmered. It started to feel like a new pen again, because I used it once, though it got a refill before going into the cleaning sack. It felt a bit new. The right ink for it came to me. It’s a sample from a pen club friend of 3 Oysters Doldam. It’s an ink I’d like a bottle of.

Shopping in the hoard… great idea @Misfit!  I think I will go ahead and place my many 'extras' in a container and stow it.  Maybe when I feel the Acquisition Urge I will go looking there first.  👀

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I like this idea so much (thanks @Misfit ) that I'm adopting it as one of my 2024 goals. I do have a short list of pens to collect this year, but they're going to be rewards for hitting very specific goals, plus a couple more demonstrators to complete a series I've been collecting. I do love the whole process of shopping, buying, and using my writing stuff, but after a major Giftmas spree, it's time to slow down and enjoy the fruits of my labors. Plus, I've got several more packages on their way over this month and maybe even into early February .

And to be brutally honest I think my house is full.

I went shopping in my stash to create a small art kit that can live next to my reading chair. I did buy the boxes, but filled them with things I already had.

The paper, especially the watercolour, needs to be protected from changes in temperature and humidity - so that got a box. The other keeps pens, pencils, etc together. There are two fountain pens in there so far, both fude, a Jinhao 450 and one of those long cheapy Sailor. Both black ink, one watersoluble, one not. Hmmmm... I need a sepia as well.

Will work for pens...

@AmandaW that’s so cool! I like everything you mentioned. Your reading chair. The watercolor kit. I hope it brings you a distraction from the extreme heat.

I think I knew that. She is however,  very into lipstick colors. In addition to the eye searing colors.

As was mine. Always. And always in the "right" color to make her look good in almost anything. She would "drape" people and classify them into seasons. She did the whole family. Her and dad were Winters (forget which sub group), I was a Vibrant Summer, and I don't remember what my siblings were.

It still influences my wardrobe color choices today. And even some of my preferred ink colors come to think of it.

The Jet Pens email today showed the Creme and Rose Gold TWSBI Eco, and Delfonics Notebooks. One Delfonics cover looks brown, and is called Cap-Martin Greige. There is also a lovely blue version called Cap-Martin blue. I put the pen and the greige color in my Wish List. They look like they would make a nice pair.

The thing is Delfonics notebooks seem to only come in graph paper that is a cream color close to yellow. The review that introduced me to Delfonics is by a person who writes small. I don’t. I did buy two Delfonics notebooks in the past that I haven’t used yet.

It got me thinking. I’ve got pens I’ve yet to use. Same for notebooks. It’s like I could go shopping in my own holdings, and likely find a new pen and new notebook that would pair well. Or even a pen used only once. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

I  think it would be fun for you to find new pen & notebook pairs in your stash.

Maybe you could take a picture of both of the unused holdings and ask for pairing suggestions, it could make for a wonderful conversation about color matching.

I discipline myself to one hobby related purchase a month. I don't subscribe to newsletters to avoid temptations. I plan future purchases very carefully.

Frankly, I believe that fountain pens and inks are much more than a hobby, because I have been a fountain pen user since 4th grade and started my pen/ink match collection 26 years ago.

Which grew after I joined the FPN, discovered Lamy and nib choices.

They are, also, an essential part of journaling, which has been mighty helpful, especially since the pandemic.

I had my colors done and everything matches, as much as possible, in my dwelling.

Wardrobe, as well as pen and ink (which always match each other), and hobby related items have the same families of colors.

Since the invention of fast fashion, I am forced to shop in my own wardrobe which contains quality pieces, in my colors, that can be mixed and matched in many ways.

Provided I limit falling for another temptation in the form of rich sweet and savory pastries.

I visited my new, not used yet pens, and selected the Kaweco Collection Dark Olive pen with BB nib, and filled it from a sample of Oblation Olive ink.
