Montblanc Martelé

Popped back on to say, oh my, the apparent desired value of the Martelé seems to be going ever up, and up.

It certainly does. I was lucky on a trip to Milan to find one in a small MB store out in the suburbs. There are some still out there. Dont give up!

I got one in Berlin two years ago. And another one in Rome last spring, just to have a spare. That's how much I love the Martelé. It is, in my opinion, the most beautiful pen Montblanc has ever made.

Fortunately I already have one and it will remain mine as I had it engraved by Mb. The desirability seems to remain high. I noted that @eciton of UKFountainPens (of old) sold his in the summer.

I agree. I also rank the Yard-O-Led Viceroy Grand Victorian equally. Beautiful writing instruments.

@Londonista I wholeheartedly concur.  Even amongst a desirable field of sterling silver Montblanc Solitaire LeGrand fountain pens — Silver Barley Grain (1980s), Silver Pinstripe, Silver Fibre Guilloché, Pure Silver, Silver Barley — the Sterling Silver Martelé is a standout, and in a class by itself.  The frisson elicited by the juxtaposition of the coldness of shiny metal with the warmth of the hammered finish and sterling silver’s slightly yellowish glow is indescribable.  

 

To say nothing of the near-magical light effects:

How much would I have to spend to get a Montblanc Martelé today?

Penfabrik in Germany has one for 2950 Euros (about $3100). There's one on eBay for $3,950, but that's also from Penfabrik, so it's probably the same pen. Enjoy.

Prices have more or less doubled from when I sold mine. I do wonder if my still-popular review (https://ukfountainpens.com/2020/03/01/shimmering-silver-the-montblanc-martele/) helped kickstart the demand over the past few years.

 

If MB did one in 149 size... now that would be a grail.

@eciton Your wonderful review definitely spurred me into investigating the Martelé, along with a host of others, if a quick perusal of reviews on your blog is any indication, so it stands to reason that these of us owe you a hearty thank you for opening our eyes to this inimitable silver Montblanc.

 

Unfortunately, prices have escalated to triple what you originally paid.  (Last year a seller in Germany was asking USD5000 for the fountain pen, but a different seller in Germany is asking USD3300 today.)

 

A Martelé 149 would be incredible, indeed!

@Jeanis At this point, perhaps the best option would be to try to find a fellow collector willing to part with theirs who is either open to a trade or not aiming to make a large profit on the transaction.

I purchased mine before the UK Fountain Pens blog review but then I like silver pens and this one appealed on release.

 

Direct from Montblanc, engraved. Used most days.
