What Lamy Are You Writing With Today? 2023-2024 Edition

Today I got in a stainless Lamy 2000 with a fine nib. It will accompany my black Lamy 2000 with a medium nib.

For reference I have an All Black and stainless steel Studio for comparison. As you'll also see, I have room for one more Lamy in the Maison de Plume. I'm not sure what to get next. Although I'm not a bit fan of the Dialog.

Tell us. What Lamy are you writing with today?

I went to a Sailor trunk show today to try out a few of their pens and the Penlux pens so, of course, I compared everything against my Lamy 2000 fine and my Studio with a medium gold nib which always reminds me how much I like those two pens.  I didn’t end up purchasing anything.  It’s not that the Sailor pens I tried didn’t stack up, it’s just that we’re going to Japan this spring and I hope to find something more interesting than the North American offerings (and, if I don’t, I’ll order my black luster then!).  I have to say, the new Soul of Chess pen is beautifully balanced with the metal section (sorry for the mediocre photos under store lighting).IMG_4922.thumb.jpeg.c3f72950569dfdc9e1cb03e7b97c88d3.jpegIMG_4920.thumb.jpeg.fa44ef855f7546a52413f32f5689d874.jpeg

I am currently using the LAMY Studio Forest Green 2021 limitied edition with medium nib. I bought it for International Fountain Pen day.

I love it. Smooth writer.

My favorite ink is the Noodlers Aircorp Blue so the pen is inked with that. I will probably continue to use this pen until next IFD.20231123_125654.thumb.jpg.7709efcd3832eac5349b8bd7c6431216.jpg

My rose Studio arrived this morning and is inked and I’ve written a half page or so. The nib is perfect out of the box.

I have room for one more Lamy. Since I have four Studios I'm not sure a fifth would be my choice. I really do like the rose or glacier if I were to have one last Studio.

I've been playing around with my Studios today, too.  The olive one has a medium Z56 nib inked with DeAtramentis Document Violet and the brushed has an EF Z55 nib inked with Document Sepia.  I'm really enjoying these pens as well as my first colored inks (other than black).

How are you finding your new Stainless 2000?

I like the pen. It writes pretty good for an ef nib. I do prefer how great the medium nib writes though. The stainless is also very heavy at 54g. It's not best suited for long writing sessions. My Diplomat Aero is also a hefty 45g and you can feel the difference. I seem to be able to write longer with the Diplomat.

It's not going to be my favorite and the black 2000 with the med nib is a much better balanced pen compared to the stainless. I do wish the nib was a fine instead of the ef. That may have changed my opinion a little bit.

I was wondering about the weight.  As much as I loved the all steel 2000, I didn’t feel I could love a 54g pen.  Although weighty pens aren’t too bad if they are well balanced and I do love the balance of the 2000 so, who knows?.  I have the black 2000 in both an EF and F.  Although I prefer the F, I noticed that there is not a lot of difference between the two.  Doodlebud had a whole video dedicated to that.  I will probably breakdown and get an M one day (maybe if they do another special color release.  But, for now, I feel my Studio M scratches that itch.  Enjoy the new pen!

I have a Studio with a fine gold nib and prefer it over the ef nib of my stainless 2000. I would like to get a fine nib 2000 but, like yourself, would want a 2000 that differentiates itself over the other two I have. Unfortunately the few special editions Lamy has made of the 2000 go for a steep premium. Yes, the stainless typically goes for a premium over the standard black one, but, I got mine for a decent price and much less than what the other 2000 special editions go for.

Comparing the 2000 medium vs the Studio medium with gold nib more interesting. Both pens write quite well. Both pens are great. The 2000, however, IMHO, writes noticeably better than the Studio. And I am a big fan of the Studio. Heck, the Studios with medium and fine gold nibs make for an excellent one-two punch. Someone could be quite happy living with just the two of those pens. The medium 2000 is next level though. This is why I would really like to have a fine nib. Nothing against Doodlebud, but I'd probably beg to differ as the delta between the Studio fine and the 2000 ef is quite a bit more significant. To the Studio's advantage. Not to mention the big gap between the medium and ef nibs. ESPECIALLY in feel.

If you end up loving the pen but hating the nib, Lamy does make replacement nibs (or, at least, they used to).  I found that Endless Pens sells them and, I think, The Pen Company in England.  I’ve bought all of my Lamy gold nibs at Endless.  They have the best price when they have them in stock.

Thanks for bringing them up. It reinforces my comfort in using them.

Almost all black (clip is silver/chrome ☹️) Safari with a (now) fairly wet and surprisingly smooth Lamy EF nib.

Noodler's 54th Mass ink is in the converter.

I'm hopefull the retaining ring for the cap on the nib end of the section don't shear off like it did on 7 of my 8 Jinhao 522's. 🤨

For my final Lamy I just picked up a Glacier Studio and added an extra fine gold nib. It will be my fifth Studio and third with gold nib. So I'll have the ef (Glacier), fine (Imperial Blue) and medium (Black Forest) gold nibs. The other two Studios have a 1.1 stub (stainless) and the stock black medium nib (All Black).  This will complete my Lamy collection.

This Just In

My new Lamy Studio Special Edition in Matte Rose with a 14k extra fine nib. I'm kind of a Lamy fanboy and am especially fond of the Studio. I think it offers a great upgrade over the Safari (Et al) lineup that is close* to the high quality writing experience of the 2000 without the much higher price point. To me, the Studio pens offer the best value of the Lamy pens.

Of the five Sudios I have, three have a gold nib. One each in Medium, Fine and Extra Fine. The other two are a steel medium and 1.1 mm stub. All five with a different color ink.

These are excellent pens and I could live with Lamy Studios if I were forced to only pick one model of one brand. Luckily I don't have to.

I've come to a point where I write mostly with either one of my Montblanc, Lamy 2000 or Lamy Studio pens for the majority of my daily writing. That's how well I regard the Studios.

As you can see I have sadly run out of space on the 5th floor of Maison de Plume for any more Lamy pens. I'm hoping I'll be alright with that....

For now.

* The Lamy 2000 and Studio write differently. The Studio, however, is still a quality writing experience.

Lamy Safari Mango colour with Hanzi nib and Lamy blue ink. Also using a Strawberry Safari with 1.9mm nib to underline a text, the ink is mango colour cartridge.

Hi.

For western cursive writing, is there any advantage for Architect nibs?

sorry if this is a dumb question.
