Highlighter Pen?

Maurizio

Recommended Posts

Hi folks - I’m looking for some recommendations, unless I’m looking for the impossible.

I’d like to find an inexpensive (eg Chinese or other) pen into which I can put inks I wouldn’t use in good pens to use as a highlighter fountain pen.

I would prefer a snap cap for quick on/off use, and a medium or bold nib to put the highlighter down nice and fat.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks for the help.

I use a highlighter pen, but it's not what you are looking for.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I really like the Zebra refillable highlighters if you can find them.  I refill them with various highlighter inks.

The other option is a preppy. You will be very happy.

Pelikan has had at least two highlighter pens and made special ink for them. The pens came with a double broad nib. The pens came in a semitransparent material in yellow and latter in green.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

AmberLea - Nice pink pen !  I had tried a Preppy highlighter pen more than 10 years ago and filled it with Noodlers Year of The Golden Pig. I was disappointed because the tip dried out and just wouldn’t work after a short time. I think it may have also been because that ink is permanent. This was also before I learned to add glycerin to my inks.

I just bought another Preppy highlighter from Jetpens to give it another chance.

I also bought a TWISBI Go with a stub nib and some Noodlers Firefly ink to fill it with. I’m planning to refill the Preppy cartridge with the Firefly ink using a syringe.

I'd consider a cheep fude pen, such as the Jinhao Shark.  Can't get a much bolder line, and doesn't Noodler's and Pelikan make highlighting ink?

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Until I got my Pelikan M205 DUO (BB) I used whatever pen I had handy with a B or 1.1 filled with the appropriate color. (Noodler's Apache Sunset was common for this purpose) I actually use the M205 with other inks as frequently as the highlighter ink it came with, maybe more so. But really any pen with a broad enough nib (B, BB, 1.1, 1.5...) will work.

I have some of the Noodler's highlighter inks, and put them in cheapie transparent brush pens (I think the brand is Kuratake] that came free with some of the 4 oz. bottles of Noodler's ink, back before the Noodler's Charlie pens were released).

The Platinum converter works, too.

I have been using the same Platinum Preppy highlighter with Herbin Boutin d’Or yellow ink for years.  I have been refilling the same cartridge that came with the pen, using a syringe.  The Preppy has the slip and seal system so there is no drying out of the tip.  I have the Pelikan fountain pen sold for highlighting, but I have never used it as the Preppy does so well.

Noodlers bulletproof inks chemically react with and coagulate between cellulose fibers.  The Preppy highlighter uses a fiber tip.  I think that the Noodlers ink must have coagulated and clotted up the fiber tip on your first Preppy pen,  Platinum does sell replacement highlighter tips, so there was no need to throw away the entire pen.

@Maurizio I look forward to seeing your new Preppy in action. Like you and @MidSouthern-Dad I had some issues with an earlier Preppy and the Noodler's Catfish inks, but the newer Preppy hasn't caused issues. Please keep us informed.

I use Pelikan 4001 highlighter  ink for that exact purpose, in combination with either my Parker Vector or no-name calligraphy pens.  Personally, I really like the Parker Vector calligraphy sets.  Even though they are low cost on E-bay, it appears that they are faked, so it pays to check out the seller.

Thanks again all.

I think you’re right MidSouthern Dad. The Year of The Golden Pig is a Noodler’s bullet proof ink.

I’m hoping the Firefly ink, which is not a bullet proof type, will work nicely. I’ll post some preliminary results.

  • 2 weeks later...

I replaced the nib unit in a Platinum Prefounte with a Platinum highlighter refill tip. Guess I wanted a step up from the Preppy.

Happy to see this posting as I was trying to come up with a highlighter fountain pen concept without getting the $200 Pelikan or $30 Kawecos. I am debating making a stub or stub italic with a preppy if I can. It will be my first time to do a nib grind besides a short mini lesson at a Tokyo fountain pen event (Wagner). Wish me luck!  I also welcome other suggestions.
