All ebonite smells. It's rubber.

Maybe that's the problem- self-preservation.  I'm allergic to latex. ;)

Do you find that ebonite smells funny?

Yes, ebonite is vulcanized rubber(caoutchouc) with addition of a large amount of sulfur(30-50%, usual ~32-35%), but I think that the smell depends on the technology, materials and other addons(talc, pumice stone, carbon etc). At the beginning of the last century, all fountain pens were made of ebonite also known as hard rubber. I have several modern ebonite pens, some have a stronger smell, some have almost no smell at all. Indian ebonite smells stronger and unpleasured than all others. When turning, all ebonite have smelled quite strongly, but after(now), one of my pen is constantly lying on the table and there is no have any smell. Yes, if disassembled it apart and smell it in the middle, there will be a smell, but in its normal state, when pen hold in hands, there is no smell.

ps: But I think, if leave the pen on the sun under sun's rays, I think that the smell may appear.

I'm not a doctor and I can't say about allergies, but latex is not rubber.

Latex is the name given to a class of emulsions that are produced by many flowering plants.

Not every latex is ‘rubber’, but every natural rubber is a form of latex.

Latex is of course also commonly used as a name for one of the materials that has often been used to make surgical gloves, balloons, condoms, etc. That latex is a form of natural rubber.

Because allergies are common, many hospitals now buy ‘nitrile’ surgical gloves and not ‘latex’ gloves.

I don’t have an allergy to latex, but I do have some other allergies. They can be very unpleasant, and for some people allergies can be very dangerous.
The process of learning that ‘x’ causes your skin/lungs/etc to react in Unpleasant ways is very effective at ‘conditioning’ you (i.e. you learn) to not take the risk of exposure to any form of ‘x’.

I know that ebonite is a form of rubber that has been chemically-treated - and therefore may not trigger an allergic reaction at all - but if I were allergic to latex, I too would be very wary of using a pen that was made out of ebonite 😔

Thanks for the explanation. In no case did I encourage a person with allergies to rubber to use ebonite pen, but a colleague already had an ebonite pen, she was just surprised by the unpleasant smell.

ps: I understand the consequences of an allergic reaction, because I also have an allergic to citrus and chocolate ((

On the subject of smelly pens, I have a Wancher Seven Treasures made of baseline.

I love the pen but it smells like hell.

This has always been my understanding.  Hence, certain products that contain latex not from rubber have warnings to be cautious if one has a latex sensitivity.

It's a bit like adhesives allergies- one isn't allergic to all adhesives, but whether a given sticky goo contains whatever the offending substance(s) is a problem is unknown.

This is interesting.  I washed the Osprey, and left it outside disassembled for weeks, all in an attempt to rid it of the smell.  Repeatedly.  Perhaps that was not the correct approach!

If I'm not mistaken, Wancher Seven Treasures was made of Bakelite, and not ebonite pen like a DreamPen. I can't imagine what could be smelling there, maybe some lacquer coating?

But I'm not worked with bakelite and I don't know how it smells when turning.

Baseline?

Wancher have three own baseline models: DreamPen from ebonite, Seven Treasure from bakelite and  Sekai(not sure in right name line) from wood.

What is confusing you? The baseline (basic line) of models or the fact that bakelite is not ebonite?

I don't know if I should now have clarity or be even more confused!

The most of modern high-quality ebonite(SEM, NYH, Nikko) does not smell through normal use, under normal environment (when writing), if you will not sniff it inside. But if someone have a special sensitivity to rubber, this may not be the case. But there is ebonite that can be smell even when writing by pen(20-35cm from face), I also have this one from Narwhal. Although compared to Indian celluloid based on camphor (KanWrite, Noodlers and etc), even such ebonite almost does not stink.

I would say the one that's all black, adding a Ukrainian flag to it.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

I agree.

Please add my vote to the above.

I think the colors (flag) are important for many reasons including artistically.

If you have any ebonite pens that are oxidizing, you can use Obsidian Pipe Stem treatment to help retard it.  Many high quality smoking pipe stems are made from ebonite.  Its less common to see oxidation in pens than it is with pipes because we don't put our mouths on out pens but it can still happen.  Obsidian Pipe Stem  It's a small bottle but it lasts forever.
