Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Platinum Red

This is review #258 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy.  This was a cartridge that came with a red Preppy. The ink is not really red.  It's more pink with some orange underneath or coral-y.  I included Diamine Peach Haze in the comparison not because they are similar in color, but because they are similar in transparent neony properties.... :D I don't actually have any ink similar to this color.

The scanner hates this color.  It removed all hint of orange or red and made the ink magenta.  The ink is more a coral color, something like #FF5757.  The microscope, on the other hand, did a pretty good job - when dense, it's red, otherwise it's pink, and bits of orange pop up here and there.

I rated sheen "low" not because there's only a little, but because you don't really see it - even on TR, you have to look for it.  The dry time, line width, and line width microscope image all seem to me to support the idea that this ink is dry.

Errata: "the hissed in unison." should be "they hissed in unison."

Zoomed in photo (Shading is exaggerated. The color isn't too bad - I think this is the most accurate representation of what I see.)

Screenshot (Depending on the screen, it's too orange or too pink. Cameras hate this color. It's got an orange undertone, but shows mostly pinkish, but a little coral-y. Just get a sample! :))

Scan of Completed Review (I had to tweak this image massively. Heaven knows how awful it may look on other screens. It was pure magenta when I started.  Now it's too orange, but that's as close as I can make it.  But it's still not the right color.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (The absorbent paper is too neon, the copy paper is too orange. (Found it hard to focus on this ink.))
large.PlatinumRedAP.jpg.fc06ca73c49cf27aef653bd25e94a31c.jpg

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 276µm. With 258 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)
large.PlatinumRedLW.jpg.e8790645da9f04bdaf518a675a3ba318.jpg

Microscope image (400x. This is pretty close to the colors I saw.  The yellow-orange colors were more vibrant and the white areas were actually pink.)
large.PlatinumRedSmear.jpg.5ef2d21fbc6ed175a3e248246c3f037d.jpg

Microscope image (100x. This is a happy ink! :) (I'm sure those are happy tear-streaks under its eyes.))

Thank you, @LizEF, for inktroducing this happy-microscope-dedicated ink to us, together with the story part that smells already like a big-surprise-is-waiting- for-us.

While this red seems to be not much different from many other basic red inks (such as Pelikan 4001 Red), it convinces with its behavior when drying on microscopy slides. :)

I almost can't wait for the next episode of our hero story!

(may I ask you to release it earlier? ;) )

One life!

I don't know about the Pelikan, but it's a lot pinker than Waterman Audacious Red, for example.  In fact, in person, this ink really looks like a reddish pink rather than red.

:D  Maybe I should set up a Patreon account - folks could subscribe and get the story a week or two early...  Don't worry, next week we learn the surprise, though the climax doesn't end there. :D

Another excellent review @LizEF

I especially enjoyed the maple leaf hidden in the microscopic slide but I'm sick and tired of all these masquerading reds ;)

I caught another erratum, so now you have an errata :lticaptd:

I find nothing more sad than when the measure of a story is proper syntax and grammar. No mud, not lotus :)

I'm looking forward to the great reveal next week, when our Tuesdays will be brighter 🙏

:D I didn't notice the leaf shape before.  And yeah, I do tend to prefer dark reds like Diamine Red Dragon.

What, that the ink is called "red"?  Or that I used "errata" instead of "erratum"?  Or did I miss something else?

:)  Well, ya know, I can't refrain - it's the editor in me, I guess...

Lucky for me I have this ink (as well as its compatriots) and I may try digging it out again, if only to experience the SHEEN.  I do recall liking the color.

Our story grows more exciting, while pterodactyl wings flap and groaning autumn leaves charge.  But who are they rushing to assist—-our Dream Team, or the enemy?  It is imperative to stay tuned!

@LizEF

Thanks so much for the Tuesday Treat!  …. and did someone mention CAVES? 🙀

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I’m so invested! What a nail biter!

I also really enjoy the sheen on the Platinum cartridges that I have tried so far. I haven’t gotten to the red yet, but this makes me excited to try it soon! I have heard it said that the inks for these cartridges is the same as the Platinum Mix-Free bottled ink and am curious to see if that is really the case. My poor Jetpens cart is starting to stagger with the weight of its contents.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of16 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Parker 45 Deluxe M, Lamy Turmaline

Unknown Chinese Maker A-108 Acrylic Pen M, Diamine Dusted Truffle

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

Pilot 742 FA, Namiki Purple cartridge

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

:)  I don't know if they're the same or not.  I got this cartridge with a red Platinum Preppy.

"I needed more room for storage.  It was either you or the couch, and I love you more, so the couch had to go."

I don't think I need this ink, but I love the microscope images.

And I will be eagerly awaiting next week's instalment of the story!  Thank you so much for  keeping Tuesdays interesting. :D

Thanks for the review and pictures. That 400X picture looks like a 1970 to 1971 psychedelic fantasy drawing, perhaps from a Uriah Heep album cover.

:)  You're very welcome!  Some inks very definitely have a "psychedelic" appearance.

I just read this to my husband....

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

ETA:  Of course, I'm now thinking of the antique dental cabinet I bought just as the world went into COVID lockdown, which is taking up the wall space in the bedroom between the where the door swings into the room and the laundry hamper, and the door to the closet....   Maybe next year I'll have time to figure out the best way to refinish the metal interiors of the drawers....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Thanks.

Sadly, I've had the thing almost 3 years now, and all that's happened is that I bought new knobs for it.  I haven't even been able to find the size & length of the screws to run through the doors and door fronts for the knobs, and may also need washers at least on some of the drawers or upper section doors to make the knobs fit.  (This past summer I didn't have the time, and the summer before that it was too hot and humid for me to want to deal with figuring out to take the drawers out and try to spray paint the interiors on the front porch or in the driveway -- or do much of anything ELSE outside; and I haven't been able to have a friend from Ohio (who used to do antiques restoration professionally, and is now an appraiser) come to Pittsburgh for me to pick her brain on the best way to do the work (she was supposed to be coming to some area antiques show a while back but we never heard from her to confirm whether she was driving east or not...).
