Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Noodler's Kiowa Pecan

This is review #257 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This is a very nice brown.  Cleaning was a royal pain: I had to use a swab inside the cartridge and on the back of the nib, I used a brush on the feed, but there was no reaching all the parts of the section where the ink was stuck, so it's in the ultrasonic cleaner - with the feed for good measure...  And, round 1 followed by a rinse got most of it out.  Still waiting on round 2.  Am also still waiting for the review paper to dry so I can scan it...  Round 2 did the trick! :) (The ink is still not dry.)

The microscope slide was boring as can be, but did show some particles like pigment, even if it's not pigment.  Said particles are grey and clung to the slide. I had to wipe them off (used dish soap to help release them, but I don't think it was necessary, just wanted to reduce micro-scratches).

NOTE: This ink was renamed to just "Pecan". Advertised as partially bulletproof, forgery resistant.

Errata: "When Makhabes ..." should have an "h" at the end of his name!

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Colors are off in ways I don't know how to describe - too saturated and red?)

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:" Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 296µm. With 257 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)

And our trio of interprid heros crept downstairs behind the "grand" wizard and yelled in unison "thurprise". 😄

Another excellent review for an eternity ink 👍

This and Golden Brown suffer from the same ailment 🙂😦

Thanks for making Tuesdays so special 🙏

Perhaps they have a dye in common.  It's a lovely color, but really...  I wonder how much water it would take to make it behave normally and whether that would dilute the color too much...  Maybe one year I'll experiment...

Maybe we should send some samples to @InesF unless she has a magical explanation already 🙂

@LizEF, thanks for these reviews!  This one, alas, is a triple strike-out.  I have other similar brown inks that are well-behaved, so…

But the story!  Nail-biting time!  How will everything turn out? For the best?  Or…🙀 Be strong, Dream Team.

Anyway Happy Halloween.  🎃 👽 🤖

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

  I've been given some homework experiments to do, but fall has been too demanding, so they're delayed.  The scientists do seem to agree that maybe my paper is so dry it's rejecting all liquids and thus slowing dry time (by not letting absorption take any of the load).

Yes, fortunately we have lots of other browns to choose from.

I really wish that Noodler's made more stable, well-behaved inks. They're so gorgeous. I want to love Pecan but the forever dry times earns it a, "Not Lefty Friendly Ink" award.

I'm glad you mentioned the pigment-like particles that you noticed on the slide. My bottle quickly separates. Even if I thoroughly mix it up before filling a pen the ink will begin to separate within hours of being in the pen, slowing going from a lovely shading brown to a reddish brown and, finally, to a boring everyday orange. The ink will eventually clog and/or burp up a clump of dye onto your page.

I'm glad your review touches on all of these negative points. It is too easy (at least for me) to look at the ink's visual appeal and plop a bottle into the cart. I don't want to harp on Noodler's but the honest facts, critical or otherwise, should be stated so that consumers can make informed decisions. This is an unstable ink with limited uses, best left to tinkerers who want to be challenged.

Thanks, as always, for your reviews.

:lticaptd:One day I made the mistake of thinking seriously about the holiday and realized it was training children to be beggars and extortionists.  Sort of put a damper on it for me.  The only good thing is that hopefully the little future mafia types haven't figured it out yet... :D

That's nothing that a taser can't cure. Play stupid little future mafia games and win stupid little mafia prizes.

But at least we're more honest these days. In the past we used to dress up and try to appease evil spirits. These days we don't beat around the bush and just call them children.

Awww.  I LOVED Halloween!  It was such fun as a kid, dressing up, going around saying 'Trick or Treat!'  And scaring ourselves silly.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Agreed. Nothing like free candy.  :D Thinking about it analytically just sort of ruins it...

Tonight I'm having fun being on the other end handing out the stuff.  A lot of the adults escorting the kids (and we would hace died of shame if we had ‘escorts') were dressing up, too.

i was afraid we'd run out and I would have to give ink bottles.  What should I do with the candy leftovers?

Same. Now that I've been exposed to the Infamous Christmas Spoiler, Halloween has taken the top spot of being the most magical night of the year. Part of the joy, in my mind, is openly acting like someone else and getting away with it without weird sideways evil-eyed looks... hence the dark humor. I used to describe it as the one day of the year when I could unabashedly be myself and people would just chalk it up to Halloween.

If it were up to me I'd be on the front lawn wearing a witch's costume from the waist up and a speedo from the waist down, running around, cackling and shouting some nonsense about how chocolate makes children fart, all while throwing candy at the kids. But the world being what it is today probably wouldn't be as entertained as I imagine the situation to be in my mind.

In my 'burb there was a time when Halloween was always moved to a Saturday, started at 4pm, and ended before sundown. There was even a year where all Halloween festivities were moved to school or church parking lots and kids went from car to car to get their candy. It was called Trunk -r- Treat... because teaching kids to accept candy out of a stranger's car somehow made the world a safer place.

One of the best things about Halloween was the danger. The history of evil spirits... being out in the dark behind a mask, sometimes unsupervised... with your friends... feeling a bit empowered knowing that the adults have openly accepted and created a night when they fear you... it is a great night to be a kid.

Thank you, @LizEF, for taking the effort for this ink review, for keeping our heroes out of breath and for waiting patiently ... how long, did you say? ... until this ink dries. ;)

"My name is InesF and I'm an anonymous blotting paper user!" 😇 However, I will not put this ink on my buy list, despite I like how the ink lines look like in the magnification images.

I'm sure, @LizEF and @Sailor KenshinThe Universe has a bigger plan in mind and some time, somewhere, in an unanticipated moment, we may solve the mystery adhered to inks that are unwilling to dry at LizEF's home, be it with science 👩‍🎓, with magic 🧙‍♀️or with brute force 💪. :)

PS: true scientists never give up, no matter how minor the chances are ...

:D  You're most welcome.  I think it was under one hour, but I gave up timing it - that's why the "Buy blotting paper" snark.
