Fountain Pen Day 2023

Recommended Posts

Fountain Pen Day is coming soon. I looked at the 2022 topic I created, and saw I bought a Franklin-Christoph pen a week before. And oh my, I’ve done it again. I received a Franklin-Christoph model 3 Iterum pen from their sale. It was $88.75 without a nib. I have two spare F-C nibs, an EF and a music nib. I found the music nib, and that is the one I installed. I also bought a vintage Parker 51 Demi pen that arrived today as well. It is the one I filled with Parker Ruby that dates to the late 1990s or early 2000s.

Here’s the question: anyone planning Fountain Pen Day purchases?  I bought the swag from the Fountain Pen Day website. It’s red this year. I’m not sure if I’ll buy anything, except maybe the cake I used to buy for it. It’s a Hershey’s Triple Chocolate cake.

I don't think there's much happening for Fountain Pen Day in Australia. And the Swag isn'tbeing shipped outside the US.

Hopefully someone else has found something and can correct me.

Will work for pens...

Have seen very little in the way of Fountain Pen Day promotions... so far at least.

Between "FP Day", black Friday. and the holiday sales events (some starting soon and ongoing through early January, I am holding back purchasing anything. well, almost anything, impulsively.

Sometimes it can be challenging holding back and with respect for a limited budget (and the fact that I have so very many pens anyway) I am waiting for something(s) special. Oh yes, and our local pen club, the Boston Pen People is having a meeting the Sunday before Christmas with some very probable items for sale, so that's my "last call" BEFORE Christmas.

And there will probably be some "After Christmas" sales immediately thereafter!

Yeah, I haven't seen much if at all (other than this thread of course).

If I purchase anything, it will be of course at the Ohio Pen Show next weekend.  But most of my disposable budget (besides the hotel of course) is going towards repairs on the various pens I've picked up over the last couple of months, and getting converters for a few other recent acquisitions.  And there's definitely some ink on my short list too (my husband wants me to pick up another bottle of Namiki Black for him, and maybe a bottle of Namaki Blue as well).

Thanks for the link, Misfit.

Depending on how poor I feel after Thursday, I may wander back up to my hotel room at some point, and stick have a look on the sites that don't actually have a table at OPS and do some window shopping....  Whether I do any ACTUAL shopping will depend, of course, on how much I end up spending at the show....  Especially since this year I'm staying at the site hotel instead my usual "find someplace cheaper to stay so I have more money to spend AT the show"....

I logged into the Pen Chalet website, and entered the giveaways for Fountain Pen Day. I’m not on social media, or at least the ones that “count”, so I get fewer entry options. I’ve never won a giveaway from them or Jet Pens. One of my sometimes pen pals did win one though.

Not likely I will buy anything for FPD, but in a way I already have. A Lamy Safari (red-B nib) arrived in today's mail, and I have three bottles of Birmingham Ink arriving on Monday. (Ohio River, Emerald Fusion, Basil Pesto). So I will at least have a new pen and inks to use on the day.

@Runnin_Ute that’s a great way to think of it. I haven’t put ink in the Franklin-Christoph pen I bought yet. I could wait until Fountain Pen Day (FPD). I’ve been hoping to get back to letter writing. That would be a good thing to do on FPD.

I am thinking I may order a Sailor converter (the one with gold trim to go in my Snowmoon pen) and a bottle of Sailor Black. So far I haven't found both items in stock anywhere that has reasonable price and shipping to here, so maybe not.

Will work for pens...

Atlas Stationers has an additional discount on Last Chance pens. I might order a Monteverde Mountains of the World Orange mountains pen.  The discount is 50%, LC50 is the code.

Oh, who am I kidding… I very likely will order that pen at $36 before tax and shipping. I already have the other Mountain pens Ruby and Blue. Monteverde has gone to smaller mountains, so maybe one day they will have the Ozark Mountains. Although, I don’t think they have made pens for the Rockies or Appalachians.

I think that Cult is currently offering a 10% discount for FPD. It's, of course, a limited time offer and its there somewhere.

I know that a few people were considering Lamy gold nibs.  I saw that Endless Pens had restocked on z56 and z58 nibs.  I was able to get 20% off one using their BLITZ2023 code.  I jumped on it because they tend to be the best price and go pretty fast.  Although I’d prefer to support other sites, I’ve had decent luck with E.P. in the past.  I’ve mostly just bought Lamy gold nibs from them when they have a sale.

I, too, jumped on the Endless Pens FPD sale today and bought a Pilot Custom 743 Verdigris w/ a Falcon nib along with some other, excellently priced (imho) goodies. I did hold back a bit because I expect that other opportunities will present themselves.

Oh, and the discount on my order was 25%, rather than 20%.

Of course, YMMV!

I just went back and double checked my order because the previous poster had mentioned the 20% discount and I thought I might have made a mistake. The 743 that I purchased is now listed as an EF nib. This is not acceptable to me as I am 100% positive that I ordered the Falcon nib. I have responded via email AND a voicemail to their phone line with this message. In the past, my experience with E.P. has been very positive so I am expecting a positive response from them soon.

My FPD splurge has gone on a Sailor converter and a bottle of their Black ink. Not very exciting, but I had almost talked myself out of that when I found some forgotten cartridges that would do the same job.

I made up the rest of the order to qualify for free shipping with Christmas gifts for family - stationery they would like, which is oddly not fountain pens.

Buying only one fountain pen each year may already be half the goal. Doing so at FPD can be a good motivator to somehow "survive" the no-buy intention during the rest of the year.

Knowing about FPD, I forget about during the year, only to remember it some days in advance. And than .... it is too late. As it is for 2023 when I resisted until Autumn and then ... hmmm .... bought 3 fountain pens at once, , only some weeks in advance of FPD.

However, I do not feel guilty. I like my new pens, two of them already in use and the third in transport to me.

One life!

I have a Walmart pickup order for tomorrow, Fountain Pen Day. If it is in stock, there will be a cake with enough room to put FPD with gel icing in a tube. I’m going to put ink in the new Franklin-Christoph pen that has been waiting.  I’m going to pretend the orders for pens I’ve already placed were for FPD, when I was supposed to place them. Or was I? Since they had FPD coupon codes then yeah, they are still part of FPD. I ordered a Monteverde Mountains of the World Orange mountain with 1.1mm stub nib. And I ordered a Retro 51 pen honoring Harriet Tubman with 1.1mm stub nib. And maybe, I’ll write a letter. Now that would be an accomplishment.
