Waterman Expert - fine or medium?

Hello all,

I recently stumbled into Waterman Experts and love them. I write small and deliberately, so Western medium nibs don't usually work for me. I've been a Cross guy for 15 years, with the Townsend a perfect pen for my hand. The Waterman Expert actually feels better. I currently am playing with a fine nib chrome/gold that does a great job on cheaper paper, which means I can actually use it reliably in the office instead of reaching for a rollerball. I'm curious to hear thoughts on whether the Waterman Medium nibs are going to feel like magic markers to me. I did my best to explain with a photo I took this morning on the 4 pens in current rotation:

1. Waterman Expert fine

2. Waterman Expert rollerball with a .7 Pilot G2 refill (it's the perfect ink layout/width for me.)

3. Parker Duofold fine nib, also perfect amount of ink and line width, just a bit heavy for constant use...but I real "signer" pen for sure.

4. Aurora Europa medium nib, too broad, but perfectly weighted and balanced. I use it sparingly and am thinking of grinding it to an italic stub.

All pens are running Aurora 100th anniversary Blue-Black ink, which I think is still the usual blue-black, they just made it cost more.

Thoughts? Will the Waterman Expert Medium nib disappoint me?

Thanks!

I would think that a Medium *might* be a little too broad for you, but it really depends on what you get. The difference might be well within the tolerances of your typical nib widths, and so whether you like the medium or not might be simply a matter of how much on one end or the other the nib grind happens to be.

However, what you can do, maybe, is play with adjusting the tine gap every so slightly on your F nib. That might widen it up and "wetten" it up to just what you prefer. Of course, do so carefully, as you can mess this up on such nibs if you're not careful.

However, I have to say that as for feel, I *really* like the feel of Waterman Medium and above nibs, but I like them wet and broad, with the Medium being too fine for me to use daily.

So, in short, my choice if it were me in your shoes would be to slightly widen the tine gap on the F nib to get the flow that might move it right into your perfect zone.
