J Herbin Rouge Grenat  (Garnet Red)

I made a mistake between the words Grenade and Grenat (Pomegranate vs Garnet).  You'll see a lot of pomegranates in my sketches,.Typical me. Sorry for the confusion.  I corrected it, thanks to @Lithium466.

I decided to put back the photo: It's kind of cool :) and the garnets resemble the pomegranate seeds ;)

Rouge Grenat

As much as I love the colour in real life, it does not sing to me. Maybe I don’t like red inks and that is it.  :(

Let's start with the chroma:

As you can see there's a bit of ghost & blood with Hammermill

Water test (After 24 hours)

And finally an artwork, not my best, but it's to showcase the range of the ink.

· What I did not like: I thought this would be my colour but alas it isn’t. I'm looking forward to emptying my pens.

· Shading: Yes

· Ghosting: Yes, on thin copy paper

· Bleed through: Same as above.

· Flow Rate: Nice.

· Lubrication: Good, but finer the nib, scratchy it’ll be.

· Nib Dry-out: Not noticed.

· Start-up: Not noticed.

· Saturation: Yes.

· Shading Potential: With wider nibs.

· Sheen: No.

· Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: No

· Water resistance: Not bad after 10 seconds under running water.

· Availability: 30ml/ 10ml Bottle/6-Pack Cartridges

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier  :)

Thank you for that review! I have been curious about this ink and you just saved me some $ :)

Is it Herbin that came up with the translation as pomegranate red?

Nope. I did. Though there's a drawing of pomegranate on the bottle :)

Thanks again for one (of your very many) objective plus subjective contributions. I love the heck out of the juice itself (yes, that stuff to drink, as expensive as it is) -- and I do find the colour of my age-old bottle of the ink not bad at all as a rep of the real McCoy -- but as a red ink (like most red inks) I'm somehow just not all that hot about it. 🍓

Actually, the French word grenat means garnet (which is also  -- at least almost always -- red). Pomegranate comes in as grenade.

You're right. I often seem to get confused with words which resemble each other. I corrected it thanks! :)

Yep. I love pomegranate juice too :) But it seems that Red and me is a colour not to be seen :D

You and @Lithium466 are both right. I guess I subconsciously wanted it to be named after the fruit, than the stone ;)

Yup, the fruit tastes better (even with its own stones in it).  😁

Thank you, @yazeh!  Great review, as always. :)  I think I like this color, though I don't know that it "sings" to me, I still suspect I would enjoy it.  Love the drawings - even the one on the swatch card - kitty planning his fruit-attack... :) Love the kitty-pushing-something-off-the-edge artwork - very true to life, that one. ;)  Clever mousey with his super-strength umbrella! :D

@yazeh Thanks as usual for the stellar review, and the fun drawings.  This is one I'd have to see in person, since I tend to not like darker reds (but am occasionally surprised -- I liked Robert Oster Astorquiza Rot more than I expected to).

Bad cat, bad cat! 😸🙀

Thank you, @yazeh, for taking the time and effort to make such a comprehensive review of an ink you do not like so much!

I have this ink in use since some years, loving it at some times and hating it's low surface tension soon after use. It is limiting the nib sizes to EF and F (that are leaning to the EF side), reducing my options.

If the ink should represent the fruit or the stone may be left to individual imagination. I also prefer to see the fruit in this colour. :)

One life!

Indeed. You can even juice it in the fruit, if it is fresh and the skin malleable. It's  very meditative. You carefully crush seed after seed through the skin and soon you'll have a fruit full of juice you can the bite the skin and suck the nice out or just squeeze it in a glass :)

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?

Hullo! I really like making ink doodles, and I'd like to share a few. Anywhere on the site I can do so? Thanks in advance!

Just checking on a classified section and where we are with that. Many thanks. Bill

@inky1 The software for the classified stopped working with the forum. So no we don't have a sales section anymore at FPN

Hi. Anybody ever heard about a Royal Puck Pen. Very small but good looking.
