Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: De Atramentis Document Black 2

This is review #253 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This is a new sample to do a new review because the original review (#37) had the ink performing so badly.  The sample for that review was very old, so I'm giving the ink another chance. I think it's important to note that a lot of inks have gone through this nib, feed, and pen since I reviewed the original sample, and it's probable that the pen is wetter now than it was, which may impact flow and line width. FWIW.

Images look pretty accurate to me. :) Cleaning was what you would expect from a permanent ink: You'll use some combination of soaking, swabbing, pen flush, ultrasonic cleaner, depending on your tools and patience.  But it doesn't appear to have stained anything, just liked to cling, especially in places where it had dried.

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 296µm. With 253 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)

Microscope image (400x. Looks almost organic. Mostly, the ink was boring under the scope.)

Thanks for another excellent review 👍with extraordinary sound effects which mirror the dramatic sequen-the to paraphrase Ethrie 😁

Is it my imagination or the dry times are very long? Is it as black as the archival black or is somewhere in between?

Thx again for making Tuesdays so fun🙏

:) You're very welcome!

Not your imagination.  I've developed a theory for why my dry times are so long and am considering starting a post to discuss it - hoping the resident scientists will weigh in.

This is blacker than the Archive ink, which is warmer - though you really can't tell in this fine a nib, only in swatches or perhaps broader, dry nibs.

I'm curious to learn about it. I would've thought that in your dry climate everything would dry fast, compared to my relatively humid climate :)

Me, too!  Hence my pondering.  I'll go make a new post in a little while.  I guess I'll put it in an ink forum since it's about dry times, but my theory has more to do with paper...

Since it came up elsewhere, I thought I would add this story clarification here, too:

Makhabesh rejoined Quin in review 250, riding on Quin's shoulder - though I didn't say that explicitly.  (In 251, though, he whispers to Quin, so that should suggest he's on Quin's shoulder again.) And I messed up - also in 250...  When Quin slung his staff over his back, Essri transferred over to Makhabesh's pack/pouch, where some of the silkworm tears are.  I forgot to add that fact.  Next week's review will establish who is where, though.

A: No, I didn't forget Tuesday!

B: But became immersed in making batter bread cheese rolls, pita chips (evidently there is a shortage!) and chowchow relish, some of which ingredients came from our actual garden!).

I sorta don't know about this, or any other permanent pigmented Forever Whatever ink.  The idea is growing on me.  Perhaps.

But whoaaa!  Those blackened wastelands!  Will this be where The Dream Team ends up?  Will Happy Silkworm Tears save the day? And where is Makhabesh?

@LizEF, love the story, look forward to the reviews!  The quote is particularly fitting here.  Thanks so much for making Tuesdays not just a second Monday.  😹

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

As long as it's not fuzzy and doesn't smell like rotten eggs... ;)

There is a 50% chance that running faster may be just the right thing when somebody is calling "stop!" behind you. I'm nail-biting while awaiting next Tuesday! :)

Thank you, @LizEF, for taking the time for writing a review of a black ink :) and for patiently waiting for the inky to dry. ;)

As so often with black inks, the most interesting part is the microscopy. This wasteland pattern of the ink has similar physics behind as a real wasteland has. And as you can read elsewhere, it will become hydrophobic after all water has evaporated ...

One life!
