Beyond Writing

I love pen and ink sketches by the old masters and try to emulate them myself.

I love to sketch with fountain pens when I go out. Though, I think fountain pens lack the depth and character that can be achieved with a dip pen. Fountain pens allow me to record my surrounding immediately at almost any place.

Here are some of my quick sketches:

Great job!

I recognized the first one instantly, I saw the original in a book by Joseph Pennel (Pen drawing and pen draughtsmen) and in some other that I don't remember the title or author.

All the sketches are fantastic, my personal favourites are the trees and the group of people. Wow!

Thank you for sharing and  keep it up!!

@Auntor Very nice!  Have you checked out the FPN Art Gallery thread?  There's a lot of people on here who do draw and sketch.

Also, are you doing "Inktober"?  That's a thing where you do a pen & ink sketch and post it online every day for the entire month of October (mostly to social media).  I did it a few years ago (posting stuff to FPN), and am making another stab at it this year, but haven't gotten anything put up yet for yesterday or today (one of the things on my shopping list was to get another flash drive, so it's easier to transfer stuff to my laptop without having to update the software on my printer and scanner, even though I can still transfer photos from my phone to the laptop.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

What follows are some sketches I made for a letter to @amberleadavis; she loves ghosts, and I like classic art, so I looked for some ghosts to copy. Sadly, the letter -though sent with tracking et al- never seems to have reached its destination (it was one year ago), so may this serve as a side way to bring them up.

After "Ghost with castagnettes" by Goya:

After "Onoe Matsusuke as the ghost of his assassinated wife" by Utagawa Toyokuni I:

After "Here comes the Bogeyman" by Goya:

There weren't that many ghosts images by the classics that could be rendered well by pen. I left a few for the next letter, which I'm looking forward to sending.

On Here comes the bogeyman, I sort of "cheated": I didn't start from the final work, but from preparatory sketches by Goya himself, which made figuring how to render it as a sketch a lot easier (though his was -I think- a harcoal sketch.

And, finally, this was was also in the lost letter, and is dedicated to @amberleadavis as well:

Needless to say, I am not a prolific correspondent.

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

Great use of fountain pens @Auntor and @txomsy!

Most probably, dip pens will have the better line quality, but drawing with fountain pens is so much more fun. :)

One life!

I checked the art gallery thread after you mentioned it. It was a treat for the eyes.

I know about inktober but never participated. Maybe I'll  try.
