Here's my version of "Into the mountains..."  (Foothills at the bottom, two ranges of mountains, and some clouds riveted in place...  The scan makes the fuzziness of the ink look worse than it is. Ink is Pilot Mixable Colour Blue (after-the-fact-spoiler-alert).)

Hi @LizEF! Always a pleasure to see one of your monochrome Zentangle-Pattern-Theme-Drawings appear! 👍 That's very smart, I like them a lot!

Monthly Ink Challenge III – August 2024

July vacation is over, I’m back to my usual routine. The mountains and mountain lakes (@yazeh's drawing is very close!) were great as was the camping time. Some days were uncomfortably hot but air cooled down during nights, at least a bit.

August’s ink set consists of:

Pelikan Edelstein Garnet – in Magna Carta Mag600 x Santini F-flexi*

Ferris Wheel Press Grape Ice Pop** – in Visconti Divina Bordeaux M-stub

Aurora Purple – in Diplomat Aero M-stub

Colorverse Quasar – in Taccia Hyakko-Hisho Seiheki F

*) The original Magna Carta nib had outstanding flex but suffered from asymmetrical tines that scratched the paper when moving the nib from left to right. When I tried to correct that, the tipping rub off quickly, almost immediately, after the very first contact with the grinding stone. This surprised me, because grinding ca. 30 nibs before I never faced any such problem. I guess, it is a comparably soft material which must be treated with special care, I know now. Finally, I managed to somehow made it useable but I do not enjoy it any longer. The Santini nib, on the other hand, is semi-soft at best but is a reliable writer and combines well with the Magna Carta feed – better than with the original Santini feed!

**) Combining the comparably wet ink with the wet Visconti nib was a bit too much for my style of handwriting. Therefore I diluted the ink by adding 20% deionized water. While I love the resulting colour, I’m not sure if the dilution was generally a good idea. The Divina struggles with the diluted ink, while it acted like a firehose with the original. Its window of tolerance seems to be narrow. Maybe either 10% dilution or a pale ink with low surface tension would be optimal.

Here is the introduction of inks and pens on Kyome 70gsm paper:

Here's another one-page finger exercise with all four inks, written at August 2nd (with the Magna Carta pen in the background).

August is still summer in the northern hemisphere. In central (and maybe also in southern) Europe it is the month with the highest temperatures at day but somehow cooler at night. That makes August the preferred vacation month.

The inspiration quote for August is:

Red heat

Yes, there is a movie from 1988 (with Arnold 😂). But that’s not what I meant in the Monthly Ink Challenge context. I have asked perplexity.ai to formulate it for me, excluding any cross reference to the movie. Here is what I got:

1. Physical State: In a scientific context, "red heat" refers to the temperature at which a substance becomes red-hot, indicating a high degree of heat. This is a common term in metallurgy and physics, where materials are heated to a point where they glow red due to thermal radiation.

[remark: yes, that’s obvious, but also not my intention]

2. Metaphorical Uses: The phrase can also be used metaphorically to describe something that is very exciting or intense, akin to the expression "red hot," which conveys a sense of high energy or enthusiasm

[remark: Ah!, here we go! All August inks are red or have red as component of their colour, representing different temperatures or different energy levels.]

Take your fountain pen(s), be creative and have fun! I‘m looking forward to your interpretation of the August theme.

See you August 18th with some results.

One life!

Thanks @InesF I did this whilst you were relaxing at the mountain lake ;)

It's inspired by the fire temples of the Middle East, though @LizEF was afraid of tail fire :D

Graf von Faber-Castell Lapis Lazuli with multiple layers..

Sailor Storia Fire Red, shows that the name doesn't reflect the colour once again, the orange/yellow component missing :)

and Büroservice Bergmann IG red ink with a touch of bleach

Weren’t these known as Atomic Red Hots at one point?

To me, August is the month of no  federal or other holidays. I sometimes think of it as the month when plants can get leggy, or extra tall and sag.

Where I grew up, it was state fair month.

Don't worry, I feel quite adapted.

It was once in Thailand when I ordered fried shrimp with rice. While eating, the three waiters put their heads togethers and whispered all the time. When I finished and ordered some sweets for desert, one of the waiters came to me and told me: "We had made a bet that you wouldn't be able to finish the shrimp." He thanked me because he had won money from his colleagues.

Indeed, the shrimp had been "a bit spicy". 🌶️ 🥵

Here is another attempt to capture "hot" summer.

Almost all Canadian dream of summer. But the past few years, summer equals massive wildfire, scorched lands, and orange hued skies.

For the fire I used a combination of:

Sailor Storia Fire Red

De Atramentis Document Orange

J Herbin Rouge Opera

Noodler's Lexington Gray.

The river is

Kaweco Paradise Blue

Faber-Castell Turquoise and Lexington Gray.

There is a hint of Kakimori Kurun (Green).

Paper is Talens mixed media.
