Noodler's Park Red

Pinkish Red ink from Noodler's, made in honour of Park Sang Hak, a North Korean defector now living in South Korea who sends propaganda balloons back to the North.

You can watch more about it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMQFp9qBCHU&feature=youtu.be

The info by Mr. Tardiff is not 100% accurate.

I wish I could like this ink. But I don’t. It’s one of those smear inks. I think the best thing is to send this in one of Mr. Park’s balloons over to North Korea. 😛

The only way I could tame this ink was with Peter Pauper Press notebooks with their thick, absorbent paper.

If you're looking for waterproof bright red, this not one of them. As of now, Noodler's Fox Red/ Esenin and De Atramentis Document/ Artist Red are the best behaved waterproof inks I know of.

Let's start with the watermelon coloured chroma:

Writing samples:

As you can see I had a bit of smudge disaster all over the place:

It didn't like Hammermill as you can see:

Water test: I filled an eyedropper with water, and this was the effect.

and per usual an art work: Cat & mouse Gangnam style, the grey is De Atramentis Document Urban Grey....

Note how the application of a wet brush obliterates the pink lines and leaves a greyish line.

Hope it brings a smile :)

· Pens used: Pilot Kakuno Ef,  Kaweco(EF/F/M/B/Stub 1.9), Osmioroid Copperplate

· What I liked: Writing on thick absorbent paper, history lesson, and drawing

· What I did not like: Long dry times, not waterproof and smudges all over the place.

· Who might like this ink: K-Pop/ K-drama fans....

· Shading: I doubt it.

· Ghosting: Yes, on cheap thin paper

· Bleed through: Same as above

· Flow Rate: Wet

· Lubrication: Good from fine above

· Nib Dry-out: No.

· Start-up: No.

· Saturation: Yes.

· Shading Potential: Doubt it.

· Sheen: No.

· Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: No

· Nib Creep / “Crud”: No.

· Staining (pen): No.

· Clogging: No.

· Cleaning: Kaweco was easy, Osmiroid and Kakuno were slightly more difficult. I suspect if this ink stay a long time in the pen, the pink element might be difficult to clean.

· Water resistance: It has some water resistance with a minor spill, but don't count on it.

· Availability: 3 oz /90 ml bottles.

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier  :)

Cat & mouse Gangnam style,

  Fabulous!  Had to go look it up, but yeah, it's perfect.

Thank you, @yazeh, for yet another review!  (You're churning them out!)  It looks like a pretty nice shade of red.  Too bad it's not better-behaved. :(

@yazeh Another really cool (and educational) review.  🎉

What @LizEF said!  The drawings made me smile.  Those two make quite a splendid pair.  And the nice touch of the tail-bow.

While the color looks pretty on paper, this is an ink I'd steer clear of, so thanks for the warning.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Funny, I had the completely opposite reaction -- I rather like Park Red.  But my bottle doesn't look like what I'm seeing in the review, and is less orange-y looking.

Thank you, @yazeh, for the comprehensive ink review and for including the background story.

While I like orange-, ochre- or brownish-red inks, none of those I tested so far had paper friendly properties. Maybe the colour and good behaviour are incompatible? ;)

However, Gangnam jackets drawn with Park Red do look great! 😃

One life!

It was all the rage when it came out!

Yes it's a pity. But I've got a few good ones coming up :)

That's my attention. We need to smile more these days :)

Yep. Unless you use Peter Pauper notebooks :D

I was looking forward to this one, as I believe you said it was one of your favoured inks :)

This is more of a coral red. No orange on my side :)

🙏 That's both the fun and the pain part of doing Noodler's ink reviews :)

I know, I've yet to find a true red one, they all lean on the orange/pink spectrum. But De Atramentis has a couple of Red Grey /Red Black ones, I'm finishing a review of the former. And it's quite nice.

Hmmm.  Must be on my screen then.  I have NOT figured out how to adjust the color on this monitor....  I have ENOUGH trouble as it is, fighting my way through Pages when I'm trying to format text sometimes -- I'm ABSOLUTELY convinced that the people who write code for that app never had a day's worth of graphic design/layout/paste up training in their LIVES....   And the time some chick from "Creative Media" (just a different flavor of Apple Support, as it turns out) swore up down and sideways that I COULDN'T center lines of text in a center header field (and that's what that option was greyed out in the sidebar)?  I was going "SINCE WHEN?" and was REALLY tempted to ask her how old she was, because I was betting that I'd been using Apple products at LEAST as long as she'd been ALIVE (if not since before she was BORN...). 🤬

Take a look at Diamine Classic Red.  It's the smack in the middle of the spectrum "true" red/"fire engine" red, "red the color of my first car" (a 1984 Dodge Omni -- the color was called Graphic Red) red.

I meant a waterproof red. They all are on the Coral/Orange spectrum.

I get you. That's why I stuck with MSword. Though, they are not the best, when it comes to figure to formatting issues of long winded document :(;)

Yes, indeed.

I'm on the lookout for something at least strongly water-resistant in a true red or darker red.  A friend generously sent me some samples of red inks, but the colours and ink characteristics are still not quite hitting the mark for me *.  I use red inks heavily when I'm conducting industrial audits.

The old Sheaffer Skrip Red was a good colour, but ran fast away whenever water found it.  J. Herbin Rouge Opéra  tended more pink in my experience, but flowed beautifully.  I would say Diamine Classic Red was the brightest truest red I tried over that time, but it, too, was pretty "runny" with water.   As well, some folks at the audit sites had, ahem, visceral reactions to red ink, possibly dating back to childhood memories of grades on tests...  <arched eyebrow>  I ended up going darker in the reds to compensate, as well as to get more consistent results on various qualities of papers.

My two "go-to" darker red inks for years were KWZ IG Red and Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock, both hard to find now, especially the former.  I did enjoy using the latter one, particularly if anyone asked about the ink name, but only where I could be sure no water would get on my marginal notes in audited documents.

John P.

* I might add that one of the red inks I was gifted with, Diamine Communications Breakdown (German market ink), was a scrumptious ink but not at all water resistant.  Thanks for thinking of me, Fireant !

@PJohnPthanks for sharing your experience. I understand folks reaction to bright red. I don't like that  either.

De Atramentis Document and Artist Dark Reds are well behaved inks.  🙂

  • 3 weeks later...

I wonder if this is an ink sample from a very old bottle. The most recent review on youtube makes Park Red look more burgundy. If this sample pictured is recent, that would mean the color reverted to the old one. Which I think is more in keeping with the original theme.
