Totally dead Pilot converter

Recommended Posts

This converter came with my just-delivered Pilot pocket pen. It's a strange-to-me style with a lever on the end instead of being a pinch-squeezer. The sac is toast, the bits that haven't fallen or flushed out are welded to the inner wall of the chrome tube.

Is there any value for the pen in replacing the sac or should I just chuck this into my odd parts box?

It is not a converter. It is a lever-type squeeze filler. What type of pen did it come attached to? Should be a Pilot Super. Should your pen be a short/long type of pen it will take an older style converter. Should your pen be a Super you can repair the filling mechanism.

Repair is not diificult unless the internal spring is misplaced or lost. To repair carefully remove all of the sac. You may need a tool to insert into the sleeve to remove ALL of the old sac. When removed see if the lever works. If so, you are in luck. Now find a sac that barely fits inside the sleeve. You might help it in with some talc or talcum powder. Before finally inserting it in the sleeve it must be attached to the section. Be careful cutting the length of the sac as too long wont work. Stretch the end of the sac over the male part of the section. Before attaching the sac apply some shellac to the section for the sac to adhere. After the sac is adhered to the section slide the sleeve over nthe sac and in to the section. There. All set.

Hi Stan!

Thanks for the detailed repair instructions. The pen is an Elite, also stamped "Super-200" on the barrel. The spring in the sleeve is present and appears to be correct, but it's gummed up with sac remnants.  I will take the  sleeve with me to the Dallas pen show to find a suitable sac since the only ones I have are too big in diameter.

I've discovered that a con-B fits the pen just fine so that's what I'll use with it for now.

The Super 200 engraving on the barrel and the "E" cap are similar in characteristics to my "Pilot E transit type from Pilot Super".

Is there a step in the barrel like the Pilot Super?

It has been mentioned by Korean enthusiasts and Reddit members that CON-40 can be used in some of these pipe lever filler pens. (Which of course falls under modification.)

If CON-B fits, your pen could too.

I believe you have the option of restoring the vintage shape or using a converter as is.

The CON-40 I used on my Pilot E is tightly coupled and has a slight bulge at the coupling.

So I don't think it will fit any other Pilot C/C filler pen anymore. The same could be true for your CON-B. If you plan to use your CON-B for other pens, please choose carefully considering what you will do with it in the future.

I corrected the filler designation to Pipe lever filler. Lever pipe filler is my mistake.

Eeehhh I'm more interested in functionality than authenticity. I will take your unwritten advice to save the con-b. I do have quite a few con-40 too and can confirm it also fits this pen. Since that converter is both cheaper and more readily available than the con-b that should have been a no-brainer!

As to the pen itself: No step as such, but there is a shoulder as the barrel is slightly larger than the cap. Here's a photo in case you're interested.

I bought it for the PO nib, which appears to be nicely aligned and in excellent used condition. The cap and barrel have certainly been around the block a few times - that just means I don't need to treat it like fine china unless I have the cap off.

And a writing sample. 20230909_152520.thumb.jpg.a7fe6a612fb7f2b9d9fdd69aa2775d5d.jpg

The shoulder on the barrel (I described this as a step, so it means the same thing) and The thicker decoration on the barrel end is a feature of the Transit Type Pilot E.

(There are two types of catalogs, one showing only the model name "Pilot E" and the other a flyer showing the "Pilot E" with the Elite commercial, but I like the model name "Pilot E" to distinguish the short type Elite etc.)

Probably matching my pen.

P.S.

Please note that if you try to remove the CON-40 without holding the base of the nipple, the collector/feed will come off vigorously.

How to recover the collector if it comes off is described in the thread I pasted.

I have seen this kind of filler in Brazilian Pilot maker...Regards.

Very interesting.

It appears that this filler comes in several sizes.

I would like to see a picture if possible.

Here are a few more photos of the filler that came with my pen. The grid is 1/2", so the sleeve is 3" give or take.

Thanks a lot.

I did not explain the background of my question.

Pilot Brasil used to develop and produce its own fountain pens due to the Brazilian government's embargo policy.

Against this background, I was curious if the Japanese Pilot's pipe lever filler was incorporated into Pilot Brasil original pen design.

For example, this unique pen design.

(This is not a pipe lever filler.)
