Lamy Studio or Scala? Looking for longevity.

owned the Lamy Studio several years ago, which i purchased from Amazon.  I returned the pen because the cap would not stay on when posted, which I prefer with all my pens.  It is the only pen I had to return.  I own 4 Safari pens and like how they write. They are very dependable and have been quite.  Despite my prior experience with the Studio, I am now comparing the Studio and the Scala for purchase.  Presently I lean toward the Studio for style, weight and price.  I have not decided if I will try the gold replacement nib.  It is expensive and the steel nibs are very good. and durability. I think I will experiment with some of the other steel nibs.  Overall I do not believe you can go wrong with a Lamy.

Somehow I've missed this thread before now.
Appreciate the pros and cons people have given about the Studio vs. the Scala (I have a number of Safaris & al-Stars and I like them a lot).

Of course, at the moment, I may not be doing a lot of pen purchases -- the driveway replacement is going to cost a LOT more than the price we were quoted, because they will have to put in a retaining wall on the upper side of the driveway (an expense we were NOT anticipating!) and have nixed the additional $6K US to install lights on said wall....

Thank you all for your input and suggestions! It feels like the general picture in this thread is that I can’t go too wrong no matter which Lamy I choose, so I’ve ordered the Scala in the Majestic Jade finish. Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to try some of the other pens suggested in future!

Let us know how you like your new purchase when you get it!

I’m not really concerned about the lacquer chipping and such, but it seems some finishes of the Studio turned sticky and another is known to develop a rust-like tarnish, so those are the sorts of things I’m hoping to avoid. (I haven’t seen anything about the specific Studio finish I’m looking at, though.)

The Studio which turned sticky was the royal blue, one of the first color. I bought one, it still looks pretty in its box, I should have waited for the dark purple.

I bought, the stainless steel Studio, in the same shipment, the store was in the same state. I inked & used it, the minute I got it. Right now, it is next to me, in a zippered pouch, I don't see any clip damage on the cap, I bought it in 2006.

It is an everyday writer, dependable, well balanced, understated, classic finish and a workhorse.

I won't hesitate to buy another.

The purple Scala was very tempting but, for the price, I needed to try it on, in person. There was very few reviews of the Scala, at that time.
