Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diamine Sepia

This is review #249 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: On day 4 and again during the review, the pen stopped writing despite plenty of ink still in it.  I flossed the tines and it was fine after that. I have no idea why it stopped. Flossing didn't bring out any obvious chunks, just some ink...  Cleaning was quick and easy.

Since it dried in 9 seconds during testing and the 30 second mark was barely smeared during the review, I decided to go with 35 seconds for the dry time...  Make of it what you will.  While An Ink Guy called it wet, my experience and the line width both suggest the ink flows dry.  Perhaps batch variations?  Or a case where surface tension overruled viscosity?

Zoomed in photo (Color is close but a little too orange. Shading isn't as strong as the picture suggests.)

Screenshot (Color is very close, but a little too dark. (Probably the most accurate image.))

Scan of Completed Review (Color is a little too red, but close.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Both are close to what I saw on paper.)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 270µm. With 249 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.)

Microscope image (100x. Colors were a bit more vibrant in real life.)

Microscope image (400x. Closeup of "cluster" near the center of the 100x image. Not quite as vibrant as real life, but close.)

Great review @LizEF

I concurs this ink is on the dry side. I only use it for washes as it has no water resistance.

The plot is becoming tense with headless skeletons, a vanishing orb and icky thorces ;)

What happens to the 💀 ? Do they adorn to Faber Castle? :D

Thanks for making Tuesday exciting :)

But I'd bet it makes some nice washes. :)

O noz!  🙀 The Orange Guy is back and growing an artificial brain in his orange sea!  I'm getting distinctly worried for Our Heroes.

@LizEF,I have, or had, some of this ink, and pretty much agree with your assessment.  It wasn't sepia, it wasn't pleasant to use, and I think I gave it away.  It's one of those neither here nor there inks, without the intrigue of murkiness.

Thanks for our Tuesday Treat…and I fully admit to forgetting the day because it feels like Monday.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:) That sounds about right.  I think I would enjoy the color in a larger, wetter nib, but it's not going on my "buy a bottle" list.

You're very welcome!  Monday holidays tend to have that effect... ;)
