DeAtramentis Document properties question

@LizEFKawecos are very good too. I have one filled pnermenatly with Kung Te-Chang, which while it has a reputation it can be cleaned easily with a bit of soaking and pen flush.

Jinhao's are the worst pens in my experience, and so are most vintage pens. Lamy's are decent.

Thanks, @yazeh.  Totally agree on the Jinhaos - they were the first pen I ruled out, followed by the Waterman Kultur (mutilated the cap to seal its massive air leak issues).  I haven't used my Kaweco Sport enough to decide if it's OK for permanent inks, but it's certainly good otherwise. :)

In my search for a wetter grey ink to flow better through my JoWo nibs, LizEF suggested DeAtramentis Document Ink Fog Grey. And flow it did! The only issue that freaked me out was when I decided to pull the nib/feed to refine the setup further. The images below show what I found. No amount of cleaning (alcohol soaks, metal polish, etc.) could get the staining out as the ink had etched itself into the metal and the feed. The nib and feed are back in service (stains and all) with another ink, and the nib and feed are performing just fine. I still use the DeAtramentis Document Ink Fog Grey as it's a wonderful ink, but only with my dip pens.

Wow!  Sorry about that - had no idea (my reviews are always short-term).  I'm curious if one of the stain-removal inks would work, though.  Perhaps one of our resident chemists might see this and comment...

Yes.  Winsor Newton apparently don't know what "fountain pen" means.

Ditto.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

Wow, thanks @yazeh

@LizEF Yes it is remarkable how much weather plays a role in the goings on of a fountain pen and even paper.

I found out about weather and fountain pens through experience.  Eyedroppers do not do well in Las Vegas.

No need for apologies. Your ink reviews are a fantastic contribution to the fountain pen community!

The staining/etching of the nib/feed really hasn't impacted its performance. My writing style and pen position sometimes shift the nib off to the side of the feed, so I sometimes need to pull the nib and feed to straighten and tighten things up a bit. The flow of the DeAtramentis Document Ink Fog Grey was never an issue. The upside to this exercise was that I dusted off an old dip pen that hadn't seen the light of day in decades. It was like an old friend coming home, and the DeAtramentis Document Ink Fog Grey was a perfect match.

:)  Glad something good came of it, and that the pen still writes fine.

Sorry to hear that. I've been reviewing many of the Document/Artist series, I didn't have that experience. I've never had clogging, but I had a recent experience and dunked the pen into a cleaning solution (Monteverde) or you can get the one by R& K, let it soak over night and your feed should be liberated :)

Thank you for this.

I wrote about this problem with the feed under a different topic and, as is customary with FPN users, I received a lot of advice and support from fellow members.

On the advice of others I purchased a bottle of Rapido Eze. I left the feed in the solution for 2 nights and three days, absolutely no difference to the feed at all, still totally blocked.

The pen manufacturer, Toms Studio, has a policy of no quibble, if it breaks we replace and they did exactly that, they sent me, not just a new feed but a new nib with it as well!
