Some Ink Tests

Some fine nibs might be OK.

Here's the same Platinum BB ink from a Jinhao X159<f>

It doesn't show the blue color like the Kaigelu Long Blade nib did but I'm seeing a reddish color which might be a form of the sheen LTM was looking for.

To try to have a more valid comparison I used the same Kaigelu medium nib in a dip pen handle to compare Sailor Kakitsubata to some similar inks.

I didn't think to include Sailor Souboku which would have been interesting but I have it in other comparisons

Speaking of Souboku, does it deteriorate over time like Platinum Blue Black?

I don't think Souboku will deteriorate like Platinum BB. Maybe some of pigment content will fall out of suspension, but a good shake will probably be enough?

Ah yes, there's the sheen! And some shading, always an interesting combination.

I'm really not big on blue blacks, but for some reason Platinum BB seems to tick most of my cases fo that type of ink. I'm having a love/hate relationship with it at the moment. That said, I'd rather reach for Sailor Illinois 👀

Do I see Shin-Kai trying to outline when applied generously, or is it just wishful thinking?

I agree with you.  Platinum BB appears to be the most dynamic of the group.  I’m busy playing with a sample myself, but I don’t think I’m going to buy a bottle.  I didn’t come close to using up the first bottle I bought years ago.  And bottles were smaller back then.  A better move for inks that deteriorate over time.

Good eye.  It looks like Shin-Kai outlines a little, but not consistently.

Platinum BB deterioration after 20+ years.
