Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Lamy Blue

This is review #241 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This was from a cartridge.  It's a blue blue of the shade that reminds me of ballpoints and rollerballs.  I don't like it, but if you do, it behaves well and is inexpensive.  Cleaning was quick and easy with plain water.  The color of the ink in the video seems too light.

Errata: In Essri's quote, it should be "uth" not "us". ;)

Zoomed in photo (Seems a little chalky in the image, but it's not in real life.)

Screenshot (Close, but the color may be a little too light and bright.)

Scan of Completed Review (This has the most accurate color.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Both are pretty close.)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 292µm. With 241 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.)

Microscope image (100x. Not that exciting, but it looked pretty anyway...)

I know, I know…everyone hates ballpoint blue BUT NOT ME! 😜

I like them.  They are cheerful.  And this is a nice one, of which I luckily have many carts (included with your usual Lamy Safari or AlStar purchases).

What next for our heroes?  Will Quin's staff help them? And the groaning in the video… does that mean More Monsters?  Or will they escape into the safety of the Starry Sky Micro?

I always look forward to your reviews and story.  Thanks so much, @LizEF, for making Tuesdays bright.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

If I had more, it would be all yours! ;)  Thankfully, it was just one cartridge.

Another excellent review @LizEf, I have to admit, that Lamy inks (at least the classic line), leave me more or less indifferent. And it's difficult to show any enthusiasm were it not for our indomitable heroes, challenging orange crust (or crush) and Earl of Greys. Maybe it's the bergamot of the tea seeping out, and Quin will discover the "tea." :D

And as it's not clear, who is warning Quin, we could leave it open, and it could be Makhabesh ;)

 Warning him about the Earl?  Oh.  See the errata - I think that clarifies it.  (Makhabesh is still flying in this scene.)  :)

 Maybe they were talking over each other!  In an alternate reality, one of them will shout "Jinx" (or "Jinkth") in the next scene.

You can sit with me. Royal blue is my favorite color,, and I get a bit disappointed when a new pen comes with a free black cartridge instead. The Lamy does seem a bit more violet than Quink or Cross/Pelikan.

@LizEF, I am on the edge of my seat now, what a cliffhanger!

Top 5 of 26 (in no particular order) currently inked pens:

Pelikan M300 CIF, Pelikan Edelstein Golden Beryl

MontBlanc 144R F, Diamine Bah Humbug

Sheaffer 3-25 EF ringtop, Skrip Black

Waterman Caréne Black Sea, Teranishi Lady Emerald

Pilot 742 FA, Namiki Purple cartridge

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

I confess, I would rather have the blue cartridge than the black.

What color ink cartridge would you want to come with your pen if you have a choice? I would do turquoise or green if available sometimes, especially if it’s a Parker or Sheaffer.

I might will have to try the Lamy Blue cartridge some day. I have plenty of them from the Lamy pens I’ve bought.

Our intrepid pals’ adventure is so much fun. @LizEF has revived serial writing!

:)  Murky green, or (more probable from the seller's POV) blue-black.  (Specifically, Robert Oster Bronze and Akkerman #09 Laan van Nieuw Oost Indigo.)

The one that came with my Al-Star was disappointing - it seemed so pale and dry, but I think that was the nib.  This one was better (new nib, new cartridge + using in the review pen), but still not my color.

Those both sound nice. I need more murky greens in my ink collection.

I am perforce using a Lamy Blue cartridge from when I recently bought a Studio that did not come with a converter. I suppose I will have to break down and buy one, as I do like the pen. I also have a bottle of the stuff that I bought at the same time as my 2000. It's a perfectly cromulent blue, but I can't see getting excited over it. And the bottle takes up a lot of space in my ink drawers.

Thank you for that review!

I think Lamy blue is my favorite of the "erasable" blues, leaning slightly more toward violet than Pelikan 4001 or Waterman Serenity blue (bought some ST Dupont royal blue last month but didn't try it yet, I always thought it was just rebottled Waterman). These inks also tend to fade quickly on some papers.

But then, in 2023, there are now so many more exciting blue inks, if you don't care for the "erasable" factor, then Lamy blue or any of these similar blues will never be my first choice! And that would explain why lately my 30mL bottle remained pretty much full, along with her Waterman and Pelikan friends...

:D  Exactly.  So many more exciting inks out there...
