Dating a Gold-Filled "Swan Pen" I got from an antique store today

Recommended Posts

Picked up a Parker 45 and Gold Filled pen today which I thought was a generic body fitted with a MT Nib, til I looked at the bottom of the barrel after I got it (they were both in a tray for $12/each, all the others were mostly generics such as wearever, anderson, or some Parker 21s, with mismatched caps and what not.) So I picked the Parker 45 with the 14K Medium, This gold filled pen, and a Parker 45 Flighter pencil with a gold trim to match the flighter at home.

I haven't had a Swan in a while the only ones I had previously were two hard rubber ones, one earlier with the NY Nib and body, a longer UK one, and a metal 3220. Not sure what to figure this gold filled one to be date wise, I'm just spitballing and thinking early 1920s, late teens at the oldest.

Ends are rounded off rather than being punched with a filler (like some of my Wahls), metal over ebonite grip, I think the barrel is lined with a second metal. Has a pressure bar that's attached inside so it doesn't just slide out (not like my similar sized Wahls where it's just slid onto the lever), not sure what the pattern is called. Nib is Mabie, Todd & Co NY 2, with barrel imprint at end being "SWAN PEN" MABIE, TODD & Co NEW YORK MADE IN U.S.A. , has a personal engraving in the blank area being  D-M-B (which makes me think "Dumb" lol)

Nice find!

I had something similar happen a couple of years ago.  Didn't realize until I got home what the pen was (I bought it because it was inexpensive and had a Parker Lucky Curve nib on it) and thought it was a no name until I got home and looked at it more closely.

Yours is in better shape than mine, I think (on mine the imprint is pretty worn so it's hard to read).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Nice pen.

I have a similar pen  it needs a sac.

If it's about the same size/diameter, you can use those #14 PVC sacs from Nishumura's site so you don't have to open it back up for a long while (provided the grip is hard rubber and not celluloid).
