Weird Sheaffer Feed

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever seen a feed tail like this before? It came from a wartime Triumph. It does not appear to be from a previous repair. I am a little concerned it’s only a matter of time before it cracks off, but I am loathe to try to replace it. The nib is crimped/rolled on, and I have learned the hard way not to take those things apart unless you absolutely have to.

You imply in your question that you believe Sheaffer made two pens that were the same.

I won’t lie — that’s the first thought that went through my head. Or that they were training someone new on the production line that day.

Have seen a lot, just not that common, but not rare at all.

Thanks!! These nib units sometimes drive me crazy. I love how the nibs write, but the design can make servicing a challenge. This one has a few cracked fins on the feed, but removing/reattaching the crimped-on nib is such a pain that I’m never sure when it’s worth it.

I’m never sure when it’s worth it.

That's a generous understatement.

Am I correct that a few cracked fins shouldn’t affect the writing? I certainly have never experienced any, but perhaps I’m biased.

I’d really like to figure out a way to re-roll that back edge. I haven’t been willing to try for fear of damaging the feed. And quality epoxy has worked well so far.
