Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Diamine Raw Sienna

This is review #239 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: I don't really have anything like this brown.  I like it. :) Cleaning was quick and easy with only water.  (Still not happy with the zoom and absorbent / copy paper pictures - still learning the new mini microscope, I guess.)

Zoomed in photo (The color is not quite right, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to describe the difference.)

Screenshot (Seems to give the right overall impression, but color is also slightly off.)

Scan of Completed Review (This is the closest to what my eyes see.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Don't rely on these for color.)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 306µm. With 239 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.)

Microscope image (400x. The colors were a little more vibrant in person, but this lacy red with green or greenish blue background and yellow spots was everywhere in various concentrations.)

I think I had this color in a sample?  Or did I buy an actual bottle?  I'd have to check.  I like how it looks here, and it strikes me as an autumn color.

A mysterious island and a sailing ship?  Sounds good to me.

Y'see that blue spot in the micro?  That was us.  What was woven during sleep was a massive t-storm and lightning strike that woke us, knocked out power, and … yeah.

(Or it could be The Isle of Diaminnia with reversed colors.)

@LizEF…Thank you so much for these ink-splorarions and the serial.  Any egregious errors herein can be chalked up to a bad night.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Yes, good autumn color.

Adventures!  Hope your power is back (or will be back soon)!

:D  Or maybe the sea in Quin's world is orange and the land is blue! ;)

@LizEF another fantastic review :thumbup:

What a lovely quote that complements how you weave our heroes adventures and what interesting sound effects ;) maybe it's the haunted beasties in Diaminnnia :D

Thank you for making our Tuesday so much special, with special effects and your creativity 🙏

I quite like this color, at all magnifications, and I don't think I have anything like it either. It has a very coppery look to me, a weathered copper, no longer shiny as a new penny but not yet corroded to verdigris. It has character and innate interest. It is mildly tempting (which is saying something, as I have so much too much ink wasting away in my drawers already).

:D  Strange creatures running about outside my house.  Perhaps they escaped the island!

:) Yes, it's quite unique - amazing how many colors we have to choose from - as our ink drawers will attest. ;)

Thanks as usual for the comprehensive review.  I had to check because I couldn't remember which Diamine browns I had, but I did try this ink a few years ago (I had wanted to try both it and Burnt Sienna, and also but Raw and Burnt Umber to compare them (but some of them seem to no longer be available).

So many shades, so little time... :)

Before I read your review I was on the fence about ordering a 30ml bottle of this one and, while I'm still on the fence, I'm now leaning just a little bit towards ordering it. (The price of a 30ml Diamine will probably be the nudge that pushes me off the fence.) I think this might be one of those colors that's difficult to really tell you like until you see it on paper right in front of your face, ideally in a number of pen/paper combinations.

The microscopic image, totally out of character with the somewhat staid, if interesting, brown in the 'regular' images, evokes a psychedelic Warhol-esque stage backdrop for a Velvet Underground concert. The image in a pulsing motion would be even more evocative. But that's probably just me.

Thanks again for yet another useful review!

Thank you, @LizEF, for educating us with a new ink review and for entertaining us with a new story part!

While I had found "my" brown a short while ago (it's 3 days to July ;) ), the brown from the Self Isolated Island of Diaminnia also looks appealing. The microscopy is a nice proof of mixing green an red dye to gain a brown and adjust the intensity with a little blue.

Storywise, I would not be surprised if our adventurer party will stumble over traces of four-leg-animal and pen-user Blood in Kelly Meadows and faces Flowers of Royal and Majestic blue and purple until they find the magic Emerald of Shimmer. :)

Looking forward!

One life!

I find this to be the case with almost all browns - the differences can be very subtle and hard to capture in pictures / scans.

:D  Yes, it completely surprised me.  I think it might be nauseating in a pulsing light effect. :P  I guess it would depend on the details (yet again).

Oh sure, just ruin the magic with science... ;)

The last closeup photo would make good countertop material.

Tired Quin. I hope he doesn’t regret trading the bridge builder.

It would!

And moanin' monsters...I like the way the ink reviews/names all somehow (magically?) work themselves into the story.

The ink itself looks very much like the artist's paint and pigment of the same name.
