Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-guri

Recommended Posts

I participated in a blind testing on the  fpgeeks forum of three ink samples. A fun thing about this endeavour is that one is free of the burden of the manufacturer, the name,  the country it is made and any expectations or associations with said brand or ink.

The first one was Yama-Guri, which translates to Wild / or Mountain Chestnut. It's a dark brown ink, but when you do the chroma, it is obviously a Japanese ink ;)

Writing samples:

Dry time is decent and the purple is only obvious if you smudge the ink.

It definitely doesn't like Hammermill 20lb paper:

Photo - Paper is Mnemosyne

This was done with the semi-flex pen.

The red ink, is Organic Studios Oscar Copper

Comparaison:

Water test: (under running water for 10 seconds)

And finally a sketch. A great thanks to @LizEF for giving me permission to create (hopefully) sketch of her fantastic Quin and Makhabesh serial.

This is part of an ongoing creation.

This is Makhabesh surprised/ horrified discovering a secret ;)

The brown ink in the background is Gutenberg Urkundentinte G10 Iron-gall ink.

Makhabesh is drawn with Yama-Guri. And then washed with a brush.

The scarab on his chest and the other gold lines were created by applying bleach with a glass nib.

· Pens used: Lamy Safari (Ef/F/M/B), Soennecken Schulfüller (Semi-flex), Jinhao 450 fude,

· What I liked: Really nice dark colour, well lubricated, classy, complex chroma, water resistance.

· What I did not like: Long dry times, and it’s not easy to clean, might as well go for a permanent ink.

· What some might not like: It doesn’t like cheap paper. Not for lefty over writers, or ink hoppers ;) and price.

· Shading: With broad nibs.

· Ghosting: Yes, with Hammermill paper.

· Bleed through: Yes, with cheap paper.

· Flow Rate: Wet

· Lubrication: Really nice.

· Nib Dry-out: None.

· Start-up: None

· Saturation: Very saturated

· Shading Potential: With wide nibs

· Sheen: None

· Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: None

· Nib Creep / “Crud”: None.

· Staining (pen): No

· Clogging: No

· Cleaning: I had to use a pen flush.

· Water resistance: Very good.

· Availability: 50 ml bottles.

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier  🙂

:) Thank you, @yazeh, for this thorough review!  And, of course for your wonderful drawing of Makhabesh!  Hmm. What secret could shock our little sphinx? :D I guess we'll have to wait for the next review to learn more... ;)

The chroma reminds me of Noodler's Rome Burning - under my microscope now - a mix of bright yellow and purple...

I wasn't so sure. I'm too impatient to do multiple drafts. ;)

Yeah. It's funny how this and Vortex Motion are similar but how their chromas differ :)

Not stranger than THIS creature!  😜

Southpaw overwriter, and had no problems with this ink.  In the pen ('HeroFari'), it wrote for a few days even after I took out and cleaned the converter.

I love its chroma.  And the drawing!  Many thanks to @yazeh for continuing to post these lovely ink-splorations.  👍🏻

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Good to know. I'm an underwriter, so I was never aware of smudging until I read about it ;)

Yama-guri is one of my favorite brown inks.  But I had originally gotten it to use for drawing, and it was too wet for the first pen I put it in (the 1990s era M400 Brown Tortoise).

Fortunately, Edelstein Smoky Quartz turned out to be almost the same color (I don't know about the chroma) as Yama-guri, and is much better behaved in the M400.

Thank you @yazeh for the comprehensive ink review and for the visualisation of Makhabesh! 😄

Despite its purple components is the ink not in my preferred colour zone.

More important, I learned today that Makhabesh is waterproof (cat subjects of previous ink tests were water tolerant only).

One life!

It must have acted like a firehose ;)

I guess Edelstein inks are more on the dry side. It wold be interesting to do a Chroma or a side by side comparison :)

Yep. I guess you want it more on the purple side, like Vortex Motion ;)

Ah but Makhabesh is a Sphinx, and if the have feathers, they should be waterproof ;) but only @LizEF will know. Though Makhabesh might not be as forthcoming with her 😛

 It would seem Makhabesh avoids getting wet - he grew up "on the plains beyond the desert", spent some time in said desert, and some time in wizard cities and the forests around / between them.  At the moment, that's about all we know.  I'm guessing his feathers are water-resistant, and his fur less so, but that he dislikes getting wet - other than bathing, I expect - like all felids, he likes to be clean.

In the past couple of days, I did learn a new type of magic sphinxes have, which I expect will be needed either by the end of this adventure, or sometime in the next. :D

Bathing?! Now I have images of Makhabesh in a bath using Essri as a back brush :D

Thank you for the review of the ink. Even greater thanks for the drawing of Makhabesh. I really enjoy @LizEF’s story of our endearing trio.

Learning something new every day; today: An ink review is required to lure some background stories out of @LizEF:D

Thank you, @yazeh, for this empirical research setup!

I always thought, Sphinxes have only feathers, until I read about the old lady mismatching Makhabesh for a cat.

So, I'm asking my teachers of old: "what have you told us in school?" :D:lol:🤭

Great review, thank you for sharing! This is one of my first inks and one that I still love very much- I often use it in my finer nibs as a sort-of "stealth" ink in more stuffy/professional settings and it makes me happy. Also great for writing letters as it's easy on the eyes and can stand getting caught in the rain :)

Thanks for the review @yazeh - looks like a great ink for use at the office. Love the drawing of Makhabesh: that wash brings out the purple undertones really well, and complements wonderfully with the original brown. Looks like a great drawing ink! I have a small 15ml bottle of it in my stash… have to fill a pen with it and try it out.

Good to know that Smoky Quartz is a similarly coloured ink - I like that one a lot (and I have two 50ml bottles of it, so I won’t run out of it any time soon).
