Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Colorverse Vortex Motion

This is review #238 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This ink is a really dark, muted purple - to the point that it will mostly look black or dark grey, but from the chroma and in comparison, there's clearly purple going on.  In the swatch, it looks like a darkened version of Pilot Iroshizuku Kiri-same (but I didn't include that swatch because you have to have them aligned just so and close up to see it).  Once dry and alone on the page from this nib, it just looks black.  But while wet, you can definitely see the purple, making this a good "stealth not-black black".

Meanwhile, holy green sheen, Batman!  That was unexpected.  Cleaning was quick and easy with plain water (that turned very purple).

This was the first review using my new mini WiFi microscope.  The images are not as clear as the old one. Sorry about that. I can't get another of the old one, so I'm not really sure what to do here except continue to use the new one for now. :(

Zoomed in photo (Sorry for the blur.  This image is lacking all the subtlety your eyes would see.)

Scan of Completed Review (Text is a little too pale.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Sorry for the blur. They're generally correct - it's a very dark grey to my eyes.)

Line width (The "h" in Rhodia. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 300µm. With 238 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.) (There's a tiny bit of the blue (like in the smear) showing in the top of the line.)

Chromatogram (The smaller image is a scan, the larger is the photo. The photo is more correct colorwise - the scan is too bright.)

Other (While you can't see much sheen in the photo, my eyes see it everywhere - though it's much more obvious on Tomoe River.)

Worried now for our Dream Team!  Will they enter the MicroForest of Doom in order to save the world?

Okay, this ink is intriguing, what with its stealth nature and complex chroma and green sheen.  I am completely unfamiliar with it.  Not a purple ink fan, though, or non-lubricated inks.  I suppose it might work in one of my Gushers.

@LizEF, thanks and please keep 'em coming!  I love the reviews and the story.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

And I wonder how it would look all spread out from a dryish stub - the purple might show more.

@Lizef, another great review   I love Tuesdays :D

This reminds me of a darker version of Yama-Guri. It seems to have a very long dry time from an EF nib and being dry. It must be a horror with a broad nib.

Love the Richard Bach quote, Makhabesh must live it day in, day out.

Now garbled paper messages, that must be a faulty quill ;)

Looking forward to the next review.  Thanks for being so much lightness and fun!

(Never used Yama-Guri, so I can't compare.)  I didn't try it in anything broader, but yeah, maybe it's one that takes eons from a fat, wet nib...  Or maybe it's just bizarre and dries at the same rate regardless.  Sometimes inks are so unpredictable.

It's very similar to something I read from one of my favorite authors (Adam Hall - who wrote spy novels no one else ever heard of) - basically about already being where you intend to go - good stuff, that.  Anywho, perhaps it's some sphinxy magic. :D

 Nope, magic is failing more and more - our heroes must needs hurry! ;)

Thank you @LizEF for the story, for trying to describe this ink, for the effort with microscopy and for never getting tired while answering all our questions! :)

You are progressing towards a professional episode writer! A year ago, I could imagine which direction your story will go - and was right in the majority of the episodes. But now, I'm really clueless. So I read them every week - I must read them! Is there a cure for the Quin-Makhabesh-Essri-addiction? 🤗

The purple is all mine. If there would be only two colours in the Universe (in the Colorverse?), it will be Petrol and Purple. This Vortex Motion is a bulls eye for what I'm searching for. It will come with the next order to complement Extreme Deep Field. However, (long) before your review I looked at all appearances of the dark Colorverse inks and found Vortex Motion reviewed and declared as a pale Petrol at InkSwatch and called a dark grey-blue at Mountain of Inks, despite looking a bit purple there. That kept me away from it.

No longer! Thank you @LizEF for letting my ink collection grow in a magical way! ;)

OMG, I can't continue my reply, I have to make my order now ... Sorry. 🏃‍♀️

One life!

 You're very welcome!  But I don't get tired answering questions - I enjoy that part. :)                              ol"LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU?........................................................uuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Cure!?  No, it's like vitamin D, required for good health! ;)

:D  I really, really hope it doesn't disappoint! :)  I didn't look at InkSwatch when preparing my review, but I did look at Mountain of Ink, and couldn't explain the difference.  Hopefully it hasn't changed formula or anything!

Thanks for the review @LizEF - looks like an intriguing ink: black with undertones. But it’s that surprising green sheen that really blew me away… it’s little tricks like this that elevate an ink above the rest of the field. Without that I wouldn’t give this ink a second look. But now…

You're very welcome! :)  The green sheen is appealing - particularly the fact that it's solid, not just in areas of heavier application (at least, it is in my Hobonichi (TR 52gsm original)).  Note that on the "ivory" 90gsm Clairefontaine paper found in Rhodiarama notebooks, it's hard to see and doesn't really look like sheen - more like the ink is just a really dark green.  Strange stuff.  More appealing is that it doesn't smear - at least, it hasn't for me.  If one has to use a "black" ink, I'd say this would be a good choice.

If you decide to get some, and decide to share your experience, I'm sure I'll enjoy reading it. :)

Those close up photos belong somewhere in the story that we’ve already read.
