Kanpur writers was primarily an OEM nib manufacturer based in Kanpur, the industrial capital of Uttar Pradesh in India. For the last decade they have their own pen brand called Kanwrite. As a nib specialist, their No 9 nib was long in coming. But it launched last month at the Kolkata pen mahotsav. This nib is 45mm long ( Namiki no 50 is 42-43mm long), 12.6mm wide at the shoulders. The feeder dia is 9mm. The nib and feed are placed in a housing. Thus this is a proper screw in mo 9 nib unit. But without any nozzle for standard international cartridges or converters. This nib is sold on a new matching gargantuan fountain pen called the Mammoth.
The mammoth comes in two colors. This and a shiny black one. Both Indian ebonite.

the pen can fill with this detachable ink vial which one can eyedropper. A proprietary piston filler that attaches to this pen and converts this pen to bottle filling is also provided.

L-R: KW no 9, Ambitious no 40, KW no 35 and Anbitious no 8 ( Indian no 8: 28mm)

The pen is fundamentally good. Zero dryouts. Reliable starts. It’s a very wet writer and currently only nibs upto B are available.

cheers

Nice detailed review as always. That 28mm nib gives a good idea about what this giant nib is all about 👍

No complaints on the fit and finish front. No defects in the  ebonite. It has been polished well too. The pen is quite comfortable to write with. I am used to girthy pens. If you can handle a 40mm min you can handle this.

Hi Hari,

A nice post. I love your clear and simple pictures. Do you have both a gold and a steel nib version of this? If so, do you notice difference in writing? I hope they come with a BB? Love kanwrite BB nibs

Thank you. I just have this GP steel one. Yes waiting for loose nib units with BB stub or 3B.

Oh ok. Great. I also hope for a BB sometime. Can you show me a comparison between a BB and a BBB when time permits. I still don't have an idea of a BBB. I am going to buy a set of nibs sometime soon

Thank you so much Hari, for yet, another great review, it is always nice to see fountain pen writing out of the box.

The ink vial is very intriguing, how does it work?

How is it secured since there is no nozzle?

Is it fair for an intelligent and family oriented mammal to be separated from his/her family and spend his/her life starved in a concrete jail?

Currently Kanwrite is out of the red-black ripple ebonite for the Mammoth.  And they don't expect another shipment for another 12-15 weeks.  Only the black is currently available.

Thank you. I am glad you liked the review.

There is a threaded post on the section. The ink vial screws on to that post. There is also a proprietary piston converter which is supplied with the pen which can be threaded to this post to convert the pen to bottle filling.
The ink vial is refilled via a syringe or an ink dropper.

Thank you Hari to introduce Mammoth

I recently inked up my Gama Supreme bought several years back and thought it a giant pen. I felt it a little more substantial compared to ASA Galactic and Gama Demonstrator I have though the specs say all have same dia at the section. But this seems to be a Goliath. What is the thickness at the section?

The Airmail nib on KW nib looks like Space Shuttle sitting on the launcher rocket!!

Regards

Now that you have been using it for a while, do you like the ink vial?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY
