Thanks for your efforts to keep this running. Though I rarely post, this forum helps me maintain a sense of connection in a fragmented world.

FYI, the current status is that creation of the two test sites was finished earlier today, and a first upgrade with one of them to the latest release of the previous version worked just fine.

Currently the upgrade to the latest version, latest release is underway, but that will take a lot of time, due to new requirements for the underlying software. Since there also is a dependency between versions of forum and 3rd party software, more upgrades are required, for mentioned 3rd party add-ons, and the testing thereafter will take a lot of time too.

In order to see if there is a shortcut possible, I am trying a few tricks on the second test site :). That's why we have two of those after all .... :)

Main software upgrades and underlying software upgrades done on both test sites. Those were finished this morning, about 7 am, and unfortunately required an omni-present babysitter all the way ....

Currently trying to figure out which 3rd party add-ons require an update and which are actually available.

Warm regards, Wim

Hi Sean,

Thank you!

As to the friends/followers thing: I totally agree, but that is baked into the software I am afraid, so I can't really change that, without making updates very difficult. I did mention this to the developers, and others too, when this was implemented, but to no avail. They wanted to be more trendy, it seems, and make it more like social media.

Fortunately, some of the stuff was parameterized, so we could disable that with settings, but this isn't one of them.

HTH, warm regards, Wim

Hi Wim,

That is most unfortunate, but being computer braindead, myself; I'm still able to grasp your predicament.  I guess this one falls into the "It Would Have Been Nice" file. :D

Two things I really do like, off the top of my head, is the fact that "Edited" placards are now optional, which is nice... most of my edits are done one or two minutes after posting and their just to correct typos and spell check errors... NOT to change context... and those "Edited" tags always bothered me,... for just changing a quick typo.

Two, I love the fact the old school emoticons are still available.

Thanks for your efforts, Wim. God bless you and yours. :)

Well, I am done with going through all that can be updated or not, but will only be able to test some of the stuff after the upgrade.

Similarly, rather than buying multiple versions of the same add-ons, as there are none which I can actually install and test on the current version of the forum software we are running here on the live site, that requires an installation here first.

This effectively means that we need to progess with the upgrade asap, which means, tonight. With all the stuff that needs to be done, it is likely to take 8 tot 10 hours, maybe more, due to a lot of reindexing required in addition to the work for the upgrades.

The exact time has not been determined as yet, as I am in the middle of finishing the to-do list for the upgrades, but within the next couple of hours we will proceed with it.

Warm regards, WIm

That [two-factor authentication] is new, and optional, if you feel the need to protect your account more. We switched it on after the migration, as there were quite a few hackers active on the forum.

Just wanted to thank you for adding this feature to the forum.
