Old OMAS Milord Fountain Pen - Nib question

Recommended Posts

Dear FPN Colleagues,

I have been offered an old style Omas Milord Fountain pen with a fine 18K 750 nib for $236 dollars ( without the box ). It still has the F nib sticker on the body (see picture).
The seller says that the nib is 18K ( First Picture below ). I’ve also attached a picture of another early Milord nib which is 14K (second picture below)

What I wanted to ask is:

1) Which nib is the earliest? and is an 18K nib rare and desirable on the early Milord model ?.

2) Does the fine nib write more like a medium nib or is it a true fine and is it as smooth & wet as the medium nib ?.
3) $236 dollars - a good price?.
Any opinions / advice appreciated.

Thank you.

I'm afraid I cannot offer authoritative answers. I have two MiLords of that era. One is a piston filler. The other has a brass carrier that holds cartridges. Both have 18 Kt nibs. I haven't inked the one with a F nib for a while and don't recall how it wrote other than being smooth.

The nib of the pen on Blue background Is the earliest.

It Is and extra lucens nib, much flexible than the later ones.

Normally those nibs are on the fine side.

dms525 and fabri00 thank you for your responses.

1) Do you think $236 dollars is a cheap or good price ?.

2) I presume these have ebonite feeds?.

3) Also, can the Milord nib be finicky and suffer from hard starts and ‘baby’s bottom’ ? ( which you don’t expect from such a high end pen ).

Re. price: Depends on the pen's condition. Mine were in good but not new condition. I paid considerably more for mine a decade ago. I have had no problems with the nibs. The feeds are ebonite, I believe.

David, thank you. I’m still in two minds as to whether I should accept the sellers offer (as it’s no returns ).

Seems about right for that pen in terms of price.

Thank you Guys.

Thank you fabri00 for confirming it’s an ‘extra lucens’ nib.

1) How Will I know if it’s the celluloid body or vegetal resin body?.

2) Which one is more prone to scratches?.

3) I presume the vegetal resin is more sought after ?.

Dear fabri00,

I have checked the Omas collector webpage, and nib on my pen does not appear to be the extra lucen / lucen nib (the nib on the left in the picture), as the breather hole is round - not keyhole shaped or rectangular? ( my nib looks like the one on the right - an ordinary 18K Omas nib ).

( picture below ).

Extra Lucens nib has a breather hole not round, but something like keyhole.

It looked to me like this in the first picture you posted, but looking better at it you are right.

In the second picture (third in the thread) it look round, therefor is not and extra lucens nib, sorry for my missview.

Feeder is in any case in ebonite.

Dear fabri00,

No problem.
Apart from the lucens nib being springy (and providing some Line variation ), is there any real difference between the Non-Lucen 18K Omas nib (my pen ) and the Lucens Omas Nib ?.

For my experience based on those I own, extra lucens nibs tend to be more springy and more fine in size.

I do not like that much springy nibs, as they are not fitting well my hand writing.

As this Omas Fountain Pen does not have a Lucens nib (only an ordinary 18K nib), I think $236 dollars is not a good price. I think $195 dollars is a better price - what do you think?.

There are no rules in this kind of purchases, price depend from the buyer and seller wishes.

If the pen is working and is as the pictures show - without small ring corrosion, no nics and no apparent scraches - then $236 is a fair price. You'll find many elsewhere in much poorer condition with asking ptices considerably above that. Of course sellers can ask whatever they like, which doesn't necessarily follow in terms of what they get. The same applies to buyers. If its on ebay you can ask by putting in an offer. The worst that can happen is they say no.
