Quick Look - Pelikan Edelstein Rose Quartz (Ink of the Year 2023)

The Pelikan Edelstein Ink of the Year 2023 "Rose Quartz" is available. A full review might be coming, but I wanted to give a quick look at the ink for those of you who are wondering what it looks like. The first thing you'll notice is that the promotion pics of the ink bottle are a big lie - totally Photoshopped. In reality, the bottle looks green!

Fortunately, the ink within the bottle is still the promised light rose colour. No idea why it looks green - it must have something to do with the breaking index between ink and glass (my guess). Below is a saturation picture of the ink - showing both photo and scan. The colour is best represented in the photo. The scan is definitely too purple.

The ink itself is best described as a light pastel-tinted rose. The inks saturation on the page is fairly low. Not totally unusable, but for me it's borderline tolerable, especially in drier pens. The chomatography looks really delicate.

Below, I show you some writing with the ink (photo), and a comparison with some other rose/pink inks I have in my collection. Overall, I like the colour - I just wish it would be a little bit more saturated. But compared to the previous two Inks of the Year, this one is definitely an improvement.

Whoa!  Cool.  When you look down in the uncapped bottle (thus without the glass) does the ink look pink or green?  I wonder if vendors will mention this weird behavior, to avoid unnecessary returns...

It looks like a nice pink, possibly a little too pale for writing - maybe in one of my wettest pens.  I'm tempted just for the pink-green phenomenon! :D

Thank you, @namrehsnoom, for this intriguing intro!

Thanks for the quickie review, namrehsnoom.  I'd been wondering what this ink was going to be like.   The scan is reminding me of J Herbin Rose Tendresse (an ink I thought I'd like, but the purple undertones gave it a sort of sickly neon color).  Good to know that the photo is more accurate.

This is one I'd have to get a sample of first, I suspect, before springing for a full bottle.  Like LizEF, I'd be worried that it would be too light to be legible unless in a pen with an italic or stub nib.

Wow @namrehsnoomthat's interesting behaviour of ink in the bottle, pink and murky green. It's a pity the murky green looks more promising than that pink. But that pink is truly unimaginative ;)

Thank you @namrehsnoom for the ink introduction.

I like the pink colour and I like the practical physics exercise included in the set. ;)

Definitely an ink to consider, after a three years Edelstein break. 🙄

One life!

Thank you so much @namrehsnoom for such a useful and timely thread.

I've been curious about this one - not quite enough to preorder, but it's very much on the radar, and I do rather like the look of the colour now you've shown it off a little.

Is it as dry as so many of the previous Edelstein inks have been?

i wonder how does this compares to the Pelikan 4001 Pink.

Also, very spooky to see that green ink in the bottle!  Could made people freak out for a while "did I ordered a wrong ink?"

The ink shows dark rose again when not touching the glass. But still - the light rose colour of the promotion images is totally faked.

Thank you.  That is totally cool.  I predict lots of freaked-out recipients (unless someone warns them). :D

Wow.  Thanks for sharing this!  The drastic difference between the appearance in the bottle vs the paper makes me tempted to get this just for that.  But that combination of color and low saturation is going to keep me away.

Have you put it in a demonstrator?  Is it green or pink in the pen?

Not yet … very good idea! I will load it up in a Pelikan M205 Demonstrator, and report back on my findings.

Thank you, @namrehsnoom, for this intriguing intro!

My bottle of Kingdom Note Mycena Pura ink (dusty pink) exhibits a green tinge looking into the bottle and inside the cap. No sign on the paper.

Fascinating!  Pink inks that get sea-sick when they touch glass... :D

I foresee this plot twist in an upcoming installment of your ink reviews!

Loaded up in a converter … green. Looking in the bottle … straight down …green. When looking at an angle, or where it’s thinly coated on the glass… rose. It’s a strange ink indeed.

Yup… a typical Edelstein. Quite dry. But I do like it in a wet pen with a stub nib.

This alone makes me want it a lot more!

Whoa!  No idea why this pleases me so much, but I like it.  I wonder if it's green in a TWSBI Eco - Or a (very wet) Homo Sapiens London Fog...  I could do magic for my non-FP friends: "Look at this green ink... It comes out pink!" :D

Another example of watching it do things with glass could be microscope slides.  Hmmm, if only we knew somebody who likes to put ink under a microscope? 😉
