Montblanc 146 nib and piston tool inexpensive

Recommended Posts

I have two 146’s. One pen is older and has the nib holes 180 degrees apart and the other is a more modern Bordeaux 146 with nib holes offset.

I have tools for the older 146 but not for the newer nib hole 146’s. I really did not want to pay $40 $50 dollars for another tool.

I read that the MAJOHN P136 was the size of a 146 and saw they had a take down tool. DE70E1F0-8532-4982-B2C3-FC943E15FB0C.thumb.jpeg.adadd28a29a1ecaeeb7494081fdc6e81.jpeg

Per the instructions it looked like it would work on the nib assembly of a newer 146 Montblanc.DCEF2798-3B4E-4B74-BB28-B7C3994D05FF.thumb.jpeg.d936373e9eb6a260ee5ab45ecf3d910d.jpeg

So I decided to try an experiment and purchased this tool for $10 and free shipping. I purchased it Jan 30 and it arrived to me in Texas on Saturday Feb 11

Well it worked like a charm on the piston and more importantly on the nib assembly.

I hate adding eBay links because in time they are no good for future searches but I thought I had to tell y’all to take advantage of this while you can. Someone else sells the same tools but it’s listed for “Montblanc use” and they want $20 for the tool and $20 for shipping.

Hope this helps someone, it did me.

Cheers,Ozzy

I am so glad people looked at this post. There were 4 tools left yesterday when I posted. Thirty minutes after the post they only had 3 tools available. Looking at the eBay listing now it shows only 1 left.

What I like about the tool is that it’s pretty small. It’s the length of the cap clip.

Thanks for the tip. Just ordered one. It's weird but from your photo above the tips appear to be 180 degrees apart. Must be an optical illusion?

I can attest this is the best ever made modern 146 nib tool in history. The tool is made of forged brass, the geometry accuracy, tip strength blow off any other versions -- for example, the CNCed Turkey version, early EU version, tweezers type Chinese version... This version is not only cheaper, but much better.

I don't know what the other end is used for.  It is too high for 146/149 piston, and too narrow for older 149 nib.

The other end (wider side) is for the piston. It works on the PISTON of my black 146 and Bordeaux 146 from different decades AND on my modern 149 PISTON see pictures below.

The small side only works on 146’s Nib assemblies with the offset slots.

Works on this piston.
Black 146 with clear gray ink window, two piece barrel and plastic piston. With 180 nib slots.

Works on this piston

Bordeaux 146 one piece barrel with slotted ink window and all brass piston. With Offset nib slots.

Works on modern 149 PISTON.

Hope that helped.

Glad to hear you got one. They really are well done and easy to use.

Thank you, Ozzy.

My pleasure. I was glad to have been able to test it out first for my fountain pen friends.

Thanks for this Ozzy, I finally found a cheaper alternative to the ones I was looking, and from the review, its the better version amongst others.

I followed the link provided by Ozzy is his first post within this thread (Feb 13).  The link took me to an eBay site which said the tools were no longer in stock.

Did I go the the wrong place?  Is there an updated link for where they can still be purchased?  Or, have others had the same experience?

I did an eBay search for MAJOHN P136 TOOL and found this listing. This one shows 5 tools available.

I know this is no surprise but the tool works perfectly on a 147 nib. My 147 has the offset nib slots.

  • 1 year later...

Hi, this looks like a great tool to use on my NOS 146 Solitaire SS.

Pen is like 24YO and has been in a safe for all it's existence until yesterday when I bought it.

What type of grease should I lube the piston with?
