NoNonsense color range

Ah! An extremely useful thread 'cos I'm trying to identify this NN! Does it have a name?

The thick bottom band is thin SS. I'm not sure about the others.

Edited to add: the cap is without the metallic "jewel", and the section is the old-style smooth plastic.

Hi All,

Apologies for trying everyone's patience, but, if you're interested, here's a revised color list.

I've found, belatedly, that the process of sifting through one's collection following a move can turn up unexpected discoveries. Last night, rooting around in a box of junk pens, I came upon a NoNonsense FP whose previous owner had somehow managed to fuse the barrel and section together inseparably. What's of interest is that the pen is definitely a medium blue, not as vibrant as a Cobalt, but significantly lighter than the Navy.

Other edits reflect adoption of the Cadmium Yellow name, as well as the clarification of the status of the Magenta color.

White (FP in my collection)

Black (FP in my collection)

Red (FP in my collection)

Orange-Red (FP in my collection, thanks to Maja)

Bright Yellow (ditto)

Cadmium Yellow (FP in my collection - semi-official Sheaffer color name)

Tan (known from photos - true Khaki color, said to be one of the original NN colors - official Sheaffer color name)

Mustard (FP in my collection; not the Tan color - this could almost look slightly olive in the right light, but definitely a Mustard shade. Could this be a color variant of the Tan?)

Brown (FP in my collection)

Navy (FP in my collection - official Sheaffer color name)

Medium Blue (FP in my collection)

Deep Kelly Green (Green 1) (known from photos/catalogs)

Dark Green (Green 2) (known from photos/catalogs - could this be a color variant of Green 1?)

Purple (known from photos)

Pink (Chrome-clip BP in my collection; assumed to be the same shade as the Surfboard pink model, known from catalogs)

Cream (Chrome-clip promotional-sample BP in my collection - definitely not White or Tan)

Light Gray (Tagalong BP in my collection)

Aqua Blue (Surfboard promotional-sample BP in my collection - also known, with chrome clip, from catalogs)

Seafoam Green (Chrome-clip and Surfboard BPs known from catalogs)

Light Yellow (Chrome-clip and Surfboard BPs known from catalogs)

Apricot (known from catalogs - one of the Surfboard "Le Bright" colors; chrome clip models possible?; could this be either {a} the Cadmium Yellow-Orange or {b} the swirled translucent "Jellies" Orange?)

Magenta (known from catalogs/photos - same as the Surfboard "Le Bright" color)

Light Blue (known from catalogs - one of the Surfboard "Le Bright" colors; chrome clip models possible?; does not seem to be the swirled translucent blue)

Conjectural colors:

Burgundy/Maroon: I reckon there must be a standard chrome-clip pen in the "Le Bordeaux" color - or maybe even a slightly different shade altogether. But I haven't seen one.

Other Blues: The existence of additional shades of blue would not surprise me - maybe a baby blue that's "stronger" than the pale Aqua?

Olive (not Mustard!): I've never seen or heard of a NN in this color, but it was a popular shade during the NN's heyday - as witness the original Savanna Green Safari.

As before: corrections and suggestions are more than welcome.

Cheers,

Jon

I'm glad this post got revived. I'm starting to really get interested in collecting these. Started with this one that I found a a fleamarket for $2. Now I have a brown one and a black one coming from Docnib. Glee!

Is this cadmium yellow?

It does look like Cadmium yellow. Congrats on a nice find

Just a general comment. I'd like to build a decent collection of these terrific pens, but they're awfully hard to find (except in calligraphy sets). Given such rarity, one would think that they'd be worth more. Either people don't like them very much, or like them so much that they won't sell them--must be both!

I have two, but again, they come from calligraphy sets. Don't suppose anyone knows where I can find regular nib sections for them? Likewise, anyone want three italic nibs (one in each size) and some ten-year-old ink cartridges with all their ink still in them?

Here are a couple of photos of a pen from a recently completed eBay auction (no, I didn't win it  ) that was described by the seller as a "RED BRUSHED STEEL SHEAFFER FOUNTAIN PEN WITH A STEEL NO (B ) ITALIC NIB MADE IN THE USA":

I own a brushed stainless steel NoNonsense pen, but I've never seen a red brushed steel model....... :o

Almost forgot to say that I purchased a teal NN at the Portland Pen Show---no metal insert (disc) on the cap top, though, so it looks like a regular NN. Another colour to add to the list! :D

Hi All,

An amended color list, reflecting some recent discoveries.

As before, this "living document" is intended to represent a list of colors in which the main-line chrome-clip NoNonsense pen is known to exist. As such, it excludes variants such as the "Surfboard" models, the Vintage models, the "Le xxxxx" (Le Bordeaux, Le Bright, etc.) models, the Old Timer models and the Stainless models. If such models are referenced, it is only by way of color comparison. That said, I've allowed one "Gemtone" model to sneak in: the Purple. Two reasons: first, I think it likely that this color also existed in the non-Gemtone "standard" model; second, the Gemtone is awfully close to that standard model, the differences being (so far as I know) a chrome inset cap disc and - possibly - the range of available colors.

By the way, the phrase "known from photos" means only that I know the color only from that sort of reference. When we declare victory and collaboratively create a definitive list (hopefully with photos), we'll obviously eliminate that sort of qualification for colors existing in any of our collections.

Here goes...

Deep Kelly Green (Green 1) (FP in my collection, thanks to Maja)

Dark Green (Green 2) (known from photos/catalogs - could this be a color variant of Green 1?)

Purple (FP in my collection - chrome inset disc on cap top; Gemtone?)

Teal (in Maja's collection)

A NN described as "maroon" recently sold on eBay, and I have it on good authority that a distinguished member here may be the new owner; so further information may be forthcoming.

As always, corrections, additions and suggestions are more than welcome.

Cheers,

Jon

This eBay auction seems to offer some of the "surfboard" NNP bodies with BP innards -- adventurous (colorblind?) surgeons may want to pick them up for transplanting. Edited by AKMA

Currently inked: Targa, fluted gold / Pelikan M400 / Parker 45 (Steel &Olive) / Sheaffer 440 Blue

Packets of replacement nibs/sections do come up on ebay from time to time bought a blister pack of 6 fine nibs (NOS) about a year ago and was narrowly outbid on a set of Mediums a few months back (well one missing from the pack). Other option is to buy a pen with the nib you want they crop up on ebay pretty often, in fact there was a NOS Vintage set in Red Marble for sale today and several of the more boring colours (mainly black) for sale at any one time. Even saw an Old Timer for sale a few days ago but went for more than I was prepared to pay (but I already have one anyway).

Hi,

Never seen one like this before, wonder how common they are, I have an ordinary brushed steel one (started life as an RB/BP and was my first 'conversion) and when I bought that about 6 or more years ago it was the first metal one I had seen.

My camera was left at a relative's house, and finally I got it back... I managed to add a few colors to my opaque NN collection, thanks to eBay and Pendemonium :)

Here's a close-up of Maroon, flanked by two browns. Sorry for the reflections, but the rain has stopped and the sun peeked out:

P.S. The maroon one does not have an insert on the cap top, and it's not LeBurg. It's actually a BP.

These are from a recent eBay auction which I did not win, but could this be the mustard color, or the "Pikachu" yellow just looking dark in these photos?
