Montblanc pink sealant on 146

I have heard of the pink sealant but have seen few pictures of it in disassembly posts or videos. Typical the person doing the post or video talks about the bubblegum sealant but has already cleaned off the sealant. I wanted to know where exactly the sealant was and what was covered.

Tonight I took apart my 146 to do some maintenance and add a new piston upgrade. The old piston had the plastic threads. Then I decided to remove the nib and do a deep clean of everything. Anyway here are some images on exactly how much and where the sealant is positioned on the nib assembly. The pink sealant just peeled off completely without an issue. I have the nib soaking overnight to remove any ink. Tomorrow I will reassemble and reseal with the 2 part sealant from Pen Realm.

Hope this helps someone now or in future search.

All of the photos I've seen have always had the sealant exactly like yours where it starts at the edge of the thread and ends at the lip of the plastic assembly. I would apply the sealant where I put the red bracket. It would then seal the thread but not risk extending into the reservoir and seal the front section so that if you washed the pen or dip it in ink, no liquid would seep into the assembly.

Thank you for that advice. I will do it like that.

I mixed a pea size drop from each syringe of the Pen Realm pink sealant. Mixed it together with a toothpick. It was very runny. I used the toothpick to coat the nib assembly and down to the first couple of the threads. It went on easy. Screwed in the nib assembly and excess came out the top and was easily wiped off.

I had excess mixture left so I waited for that to setup and took about 30 minutes before it became rubbery and no longer runny.

I let the pen setup for a few hours and then test filled with some distilled water. No leaking. I will fill with some ink tonight and post a close up of the nib.

Here is a picture of the excess and the original MB sealant. The Pen Realm stuff worked like a charm.

Nice, glad it worked out. Now, what kind of sealant did you use for the rear? On the piston mechanism they use a clear rubber sealant that's different from what they use on the front. The one they use in the rear seems to be a weakened version of the school rubber cement? I wonder who sells those?

My red arrow indicates where the clear rubber sealant goes.

No sealant on the piston. I assume a sealant was added so that the piston assembly would not unscrew during use. I checked to see if any water was leaking past the new plunger seal and found none. I just added silicone grease to the threads as added security and then tightened piston a little past hand tight.

Pen looks good and feels good. The added weight of the all brass piston and plunger give the pen a good hefty feel.

The nib collar all sealed up and no water has leaked out.711CAD73-BD88-445A-8962-38131F7E62DE.thumb.jpeg.95c622a2fd52a5f81bb2db2b8eeb98d4.jpegA299839E-F5FE-4151-9090-8B4B92D0F5CF.thumb.jpeg.339da456f56aa4a4e52be92558823366.jpeg

The lighting is this picture is reflecting my red shirt. It is not the pink sealant.

Final seal test was inking the pen up and taking to work. I inked it up with Iroshizuku Momiji a very nice looking red.

The pen held its liquid and was a joy to write with. The Pen Realm pink sealant worked like it should and was easy to mix and apply.3DBD8148-7C2E-40FE-8489-477EC89A74C0.thumb.jpeg.ca373640a5f7f5cc380ad7cb26a47aae.jpeg

Ya gotta love a happy ending. Well done.

Interesting. I recall hearing or reading somewhere that the old bubblegum sealant can bunch up and crack a section when trying to remove a nib. Maybe I’m mistaken.

Why silicone grease instead of something designed to fill threads like a rosin-based thread sealant?

@omarcenaroI was thinking about Montblanc's sealant for the piston side some more. In so doing I thought that the closest sealant that I can think of is the credit glue. You know? The kind that you see when you receive your credit card in the mail and it's attached with this gummy glue that's easy to remove?

In doing a google search I found this: low tack booger glue
