Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Jacques Herbin Gris Orage

LizEF

Recommended Posts

This is review #216 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Cleaning was quick and easy, but as usual, will take more time if you want to get all the glitter out.  I had to floss after 1 day, and floss + prime the feed after ~3.5 days.  This grey is pretty neutral (not cool or blue-leaning, not warm or brown-leaning).  If there's shading, the glitter hides it.  This ink likes to stain skin and is harder to remove than many inks.

Zoomed in photo (This is an almost perfect match to the color I see on the page.)

Screenshot (This seems a little too cool / blue.)

Scan of Completed Review (A little too cool / blue to my eyes.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Both are very close to what I see. We were having a serious glitter moment when I made these. :D)

Line width (One of the lines used for dry time. Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 291µm. With 216 inks measured, the average line width is 295µm.)

Microscope image (100x. Glitter particles are in many colors, yet only gold is seen when writing.)

Great review @LizEF

I used this ink donkey's years ago, for Christmas cards. But then. I lost interest in all things glitter, thankfully. I'm glad that your new screen shows the colours off as they should :)

There's enough gold for that to work well.

:D  Can't blame you for that.  I think giving people something with glitter on it should require you to obtain their consent before you ever enter the same city. ;)

:) Thanks!  It is much nicer - never imagined my old screen was so blue-leaning.

Me, too.  No glitter inks here, except on glass dip pens (because I have a fondness for last year's InkVent Pink Ice).  I keep a sample vial of Emeraude de Chivor just to shake it up and look at it now and then.  😜

@LizEF, love the story.  Quin and his staff are starting to strike up an acquaintance!  Thanks for this revew, and for everything you do here.

As for the quote, I was just thinking about that very same thing.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:) It can be disconcerting when you realize just how much time you spend taking care of all the inanimate objects that are supposed to save you time or make your life easier!

‘Storm Grey’ is shot-through with golden glitter? 😮

Then again, I suppose this does make sense; after all, les nuages gris of an actual orage would indeed tend to be shot-through with golden/iridiscent éclairs… 🤔

A special thank you to @LizEF for detailing the clogging-hazards of the shiny ink.

I do not own any ‘glitter’ inks yet, but this review reminds me that, should I ever decide to buy one, I also need to buy a glass dip-pen to use it with.

Edit to add:

Did you ever test it for water resistance? Could it be used to write the addresses on Christmas cards?

As we all discover eventually, the pens that you own end up owning you 😉

:) Perhaps it's the litter picked up and carried by the storm winds. :D

Nah, just take apart one of those anti-theft devices, extract the thinnest shim, and use it now and again to floss your tines. :)

Thank you @LizEF for the review and for the nice guideline of how to restore a damaged mulberry tree! I will test this upcoming summer! 😊

Always fascinating to see the magnified writing sample and the microscopic image. Glitter (glimmer?) particles seem to be of narrow size variation - requires a "well done" to J.Herban.

One life!

  You're most welcome!  (I actually have a mulberry tree in the back yard that experienced a growth spurt over the summer and now I need to lop some of its limbs!)

Nice base colour - the darker sibling of Gris Nuage. Herbin certainly have a lot of greys with sky-themed names... Confusing. I can never remember which grey is which: Gris Nuage, Gris Orage, Stormy Grey. But wait a minute: "Orage" is French for "storm" - so the Stormy Grey labeled one I have at home must be this Gris Orage.

:D  Agreed on all counts!  And yes, after much research, I figured out they are one and the same (Stormy and Orage), but since the sample sent to me was labeled Gris Orage, I used that.  (And forgot to mention its alias.)

  • 9 months later...

I just fopund out I had seven gray inks, so inked them

Stormy gray was a bit dark, and I'm going to have to go to a BB to make the glitter look more than a Pelikan 200 M.

The good news is I keep looking at that  Pelikan 200 m, for how very smooth it writes with this Herbin Stormy Gray.

I expect a good ...good and sooth from my 200's and I have a handful, but not or close to butter smooth.

I noticed how smooth it is, in the printing paper is just run of the mill 80g.

Chasing shading inks, never looked for great lubrication....so have something else to look for in shading inks.....
